Anthony Joshua’s First-Ever Showdown Confirmed for Next Year as Adamu Secures FG Backing in Africa

Anthony Joshua is set for his first professional fight in Africa next year, with Federal Government backing secured.

Dr Ezekiel Adamu, Chief Executive Officer of Balmoral Group, has disclosed that the Federal Government is backing his ambitious plan to stage Anthony Joshua’s first professional fight in Africa, with early 2026 set as the target date.

Adamu, who is partnering with Amir Khan Promotions, spoke with The Ring magazine about his long-term vision for Nigerian boxing while preparing for his upcoming October 1 show in Lagos, billed as “Nigeria’s biggest fight night ever.” The event, titled Chaos in the Ring, will be headlined by Brandon Glanton’s grudge clash against Marcus Browne and broadcast globally on DAZN.

“We see October 1 as just a little sneak peek. This is really just a showcase of what Nigeria is about and what we can make happen,” Adamu said. “We’ve got the population, we’ve got the infrastructure and we’ve got the technical know-how. We have big plans coming.”

The October card also features former British, Commonwealth and European light heavyweight champion Dan Azeez, who turned down more lucrative fight offers to be part of the Lagos event. According to Adamu, the excitement of competing in Africa is drawing fighters with Nigerian roots, and he expects global stars to follow.

“Of course there is Anthony Joshua,” Adamu said. “But what about Efe Ajagba, Deontay Wilder, Lawrence Okolie and also Moses Itauma whose father is from Nigeria. In fact most of the heavyweight division has Nigerian blood in them.”

Joshua, a two-time world heavyweight champion, was born in Watford, England, but spent part of his childhood in Nigeria and has often spoken of his desire to fight in the country before the end of his career.

Adamu confirmed he has held talks with Joshua’s camp, with discussions centring on Abuja Stadium as the likely venue.

“We are going to get Joshua,” Adamu stated. “I spoke with him, I spoke with his team and they already said to me, ‘If we had an offer from Nigeria it’s a match made in heaven.’ Joshua has always said that before he ends his career he wants to fight in Nigeria and we are going to make that fight happen.”

Adamu revealed that the Abuja Stadium, which holds 50,000 spectators, is being considered for the blockbuster bout.

Potential opponents include fellow Africans such as Tony Yoka and Martin Bakole, with heavyweight star Deontay Wilder also said to be open to an African fight.

“This would definitely be two Africans,” Adamu added. “Now we have a big promotion and Nigeria is the biggest market. It’s a no-brainer for Joshua to fight in Nigeria.”

But while Joshua’s future seems clearer to a degree, Fury’s own chances of making a walk to the ring have been thrown into jeopardy.

However, as far as Fury’s long-time promoter Frank Warren is concerned, fans should not get too hopeful when it comes to seeing the ex-WBC kingpin in the ring soon.

All week Crawford exuded unrelenting confidence. There was no doubt in his mind.

He was relaxed and smiling throughout fight week, unfazed by the occasion. Even when he wound up the Mexican fans by making his entrance to a mariachi band, there was never a flicker of doubt he wouldn’t back it up.

Asked when he knew he had beaten Alvarez, Crawford coolly responded: “When he signed the contract.”

Inevitable comparisons will now be drawn with American great Floyd Mayweather, but Crawford batted them away.

“Floyd was the greatest of his era. I’m the greatest of this era. There’s no need to compare,” he said.

“If the business was right and everything was right on that front, me and Anthony Joshua.

“That’s a fight that I would take at Wembley Stadium. It’s a dangerous fight for my legacy, it’s a dangerous fight across the board. But that’s a fight that would get me in the gym and get me in the mindset that I need to be in to go to war.

Joshua quickly hit back suggesting that this is purely a financial move from Ward.

He savagely said: “Pay Day Pay Day [Canelo voice].”

Which then sparked a back-and-forth between the pair in the comment section of Ward’s post.

To which Joshua replied: “Don’t come asking for multi millions to fight me. Put your pride before your ego and let’s rumble.”

That was where their public interactions came to a close, although Joshua continued to respond to fans remarks in the same comment section.

Who will Anthony Joshua be fighting next?

Ward seemed serious in getting a chance to fight Joshua, but as it stands the Briton is heavily linked to a fight with another American instead.

Paul recently met with Saudi boxing promoter Turki Alalshikh to discuss the terms.

Having already verbally agreed to fight it seems to be a matter of when, not if, we see them share the ring.

Joshua’s long-term promoter and Matchroom Boxing chairman, Eddie Hearn, issued Paul a warning should their bout go ahead.

It seemed to be a humorous idea at one stage, but now as the conversations are progressing we may seriously see a match up between Joshua and the Youtuber-turned-boxer after all.

The game plan, which saw him outmuscle Spence Jr, is one that Paulie Malignaggi, former IBF super lightweight champion, points to as the way to ‘surprise’ his next rival.

In a video with BoxingScene, Malignaggi said: “(Erislandy) Lara stayed true to his qualities, which is his boxing. He stayed true to his identity. I don’t know that Crawford is not going to stay true to his identity.

Maybe you want to muscle around Canelo. One thing at least that surprised me in the Errol Spence fight was how physically strong Crawford was in manhandling Spence. He was hurting him with punches, but he was also physically manhandling him.”

‘Magic Man’ had spoken about the successes of Erislandy Lara in his matchup with the 35-year-old Guadalajaran, which did not earn him a win on the cards but tested the current Mexican great.

The outspoken Italian-American has previously said the challenger is a more complete fighter than the four-division champion, Alvarez, and thinks fans will be ‘surprised’ by his plan for the contest.

Although others have doubted whether the Omaha fighter can even make a dent in his opponent in Las Vegas, Gabe Rosado believes the power of fighters from different weight classes is not the same, even when a fighter moves up.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Rosado explained sparring a bigger man is different to facing a naturally heavier boxer with 10-oz gloves on.

He said: “I don’t see how Crawford could hurt Canelo because Canelo’s been in there with (Sergey) Kovalev. He’s been in there with (Dmitry) Bivol.

“He’s been in there with big punchers. How can a guy that’s really a 147-pounder, even though he’s up in weight, I don’t see how he could hurt (Canelo).”

‘Bud’ was previously pushed to the limit by Olympian Israil Madrimov at super welterweight, and detractors of the one-time 154-pound titleholder have used it as an example of why he may struggle against Saul Alvarez.

However, the boxing trainer Jose Benavidez Sr is not convinced that ‘Bud’ will even take the fight to the undisputed super middleweight champion.

Benavidez is not as impressed with the 37-year-old from Omaha as others inside the sport are, and believes this is not going to be a contest the fans will enjoy.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, he said: “I think it’s going to be a Tom and Jerry fight, at the end of the day, Crawford has not been looking really good. We saw how he looked at his past fight. Canelo, the reflexes are not there, his power is not there.

“The knees are not the same. Canelo is going to try to knock him out, but Crawford is going to do what he does best. He’s going to move around, try to win the rounds.”

The last two performances of the former undisputed welterweight champion have been vastly different from one another.

Arguably his greatest career performance against Errol Spence Jr in 2023 ended with a ninth-round knockout, whereas his most recent victory, in a weight division above, saw him have some trouble with Olympian Israil Madrimov.

It is the latter performance that Sr thinks viewers should expect.

“If Crawford stays, Canelo can knock him out because Canelo is a bigger guy. I don’t think Crawford’s going to come and give the fans what they want. He doesn’t care,” he said.

World heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury says he has been taking cocaine to help him deal with depression.

The British fighter said he has suffered mental health issues for years and has not trained since May.

“I’ve been out drinking, Monday to Friday to Sunday, and taking cocaine,” Fury, 28, told Rolling Stone magazine.

It comes two days after Fury claimed on social media to have retired, before retracting the comment three hours later, saying it was a joke.

Speaking about his mental health issues, Fury added: “I can’t deal with it and the only thing that helps me is when I get drunk out of my mind.

“They say I’ve got a version of bipolar. I’m a manic depressive. I just hope someone kills me before I kill myself.”

Fury beat Ukraine’s Wladimir Klitschko last November to win the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles. It was 40-year-old Klitschko’s first loss since 2004.

Within two weeks, Fury was stripped of the IBF title because he was unable to fight mandatory challenger Vyacheslav Glazkov.

A rematch with Klitschko was cancelled in July – with Fury citing injury – and the bout was rescheduled for 29 October at Manchester Arena.

However, that has also been called off, with Fury’s uncle and trainer Peter Fury saying he does not expect to see his nephew in the ring again until 2017.

Fury, who is from the traveller community, told Rolling Stone he had been the victim of a “witch hunt” following his win over Klitschko, claiming he had even been turned away from restaurants with his family because of his heritage.

He said: “I’m the heavyweight champion of the world and I’ve been told, ‘Sorry mate, you can’t come in, no travellers allowed’.

“I used to love boxing when I was a kid. I hate boxing now.”

Fury faces a UK Anti-Doping hearing in November after traces of a banned substance were allegedly found in a urine sample in June.

Fury told Rolling Stone he had taken cocaine only in recent months, once he had stopped training, and had never taken performance-enhancing substances.

Fury would be delighted to have the chance to take on Usyk again after losing his heavyweight titles in their undisputed bout.
