PGA Tour legend Tiger Woods’ Former Caddie Reveals the Decision Behind the Move

PGA Tour legend Tiger Woods and his former caddie Steve Williams formed one of the most successful player-caddie partnerships in golf history. But when Woods first approached Williams in 1999, the veteran caddie did not immediately accept the offer.

On the High Performance podcast in April, Williams revealed that he took 24 hours to consider Woods’ offer after meeting Woods at his Orlando home in March 1999. He later agreed to join his team.

“I just didn’t sort of say to him when I was at his house, I didn’t tell him right there and then I was going to take the job, but I thought about it for 24 hours,” said Williams.

After parting ways with original tour caddie Mike “Fluff” Cowan, Woods reportedly chose Williams as his next caddie.

Williams knew the standards of Woods and was up for the challenge. The Cypress-born golfer was about 23 years old when they met and was already eyeing a historic career.

“I knew he had lofty goals. We talked about what his goals were. It was fantastic to see someone had such a strong desire to break Jack’s record of 18 majors and you know his whole career and even you know 99’ he’s still only a young guy on the tour only been on the tour for four years and that and but you know he had strong goals and and and wanted to do you know create a legacy,” said Williams.

The pair went on to dominate the sport. Their partnership reached new heights during the Tiger Slam, when Woods won four consecutive majors between 2000 and 2001. Woods ultimately won 13 of his 15 major titles and countless other tournaments with Williams on the bag.

Tiger Woods

Their relationship went beyond the golf course, as Woods became the best man at Williams’ wedding and also attended many of Williams’ dirt track races

However, the pair fell out in 2011, bringing their 13-year partnership to an end.

On July 20, 2011, Woods announced that he had decided to make a change and end Williams’ tenure as his caddie.

“Following the completion of the AT&T National I am no longer caddying for Tiger after he informed me that he needed to make a change. After 13 years of loyal service needless to say this came as a shock,” Williams wrote on his website.

Williams was already working with Australia’s Adam Scott even before the split, when Woods was recovering from injuries. Following the fallout, Williams joined forces with Scott.

Scott lifted the 2013 Masters title with Williams on the bag. In 2017, the duo split before reuniting in 2022.

Gervonta Makes Move for Comeback Clash With Unbeaten Rival: “It Could Happen Very Soon”

Gervonta Davis: After months of uncertainty, Gervonta Davis appears to be moving closer to a return to the ring. Davis has not fought since his controversial majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr. in March 2025, a result many felt should have gone against him after Roach was denied a knockdown ruling.

A planned exhibition with Jake Paul was later scrapped as Davis became embroiled in legal troubles, including charges relating to battery, false imprisonment and attempted kidnapping, while an arrest warrant and civil proceedings have further complicated his return to the ring.

After being named ‘champion in recess’ earlier this year, the WBA then officially ordered ‘Tank’ to defend his lightweight world title against mandatory challenger Floyd Schofield on May 23, giving both camps until June 22 to reach an agreement before purse bids are called.

Though some felt that Davis would vacate the belt, either not ready to return or to search for a bigger name, negotiations are now reportedly ongoing. Providing the latest update, Schofield’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya told Fight Hub TV that he is expecting significant progression this week.

“Tom Brown [of TGB] and Eric Gomez from Golden Boy are in talks and we’re waiting for a proposal, which should happen in the next few days.

Gervonta Davis

“That’s a fight that Floyd always wanted. That’s a fight that I believe Tank Davis will be very motivated to make happen. It’s a great fight. People have seen Floyd fight, he’s performed very well and surprised a lot of people. This is a natural fit for him next. The fact that the WBA ordered this fight and we can make it happen very soon is music to my ears. This is one of those fights that fans will really fall in love with.”

Schofield has emerged as one of the leading young lightweights in the sport. The unbeaten 23-year-old, known as ‘Kid Austin’, holds a 19-0 record with 13 knockouts and most recently stopped former world champion Tevin Farmer inside a round.

He was due to challenge Shakur Stevenson for a world title last year before illness forced him out during fight week, but has since climbed to the No.1 position in the WBA rankings and now finds himself on the verge of the biggest opportunity of his career.

Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua fight contracted to be in UK

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua’s long-awaited heavyweight showdown is contracted to take place in the United Kingdom, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

The pair are due to meet later this year after agreeing to face each other in a deal backed by Saudi Arabian boxing powerbroker Turki Al-Sheikh.

The location and date of the heavyweight contest has yet to be confirmed with multiple venues linked to hosting the bout.

The latest suggested to be in the running was Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium, according to a report by BoxingScene.

But Hearn, Joshua’s longtime promoter, has confirmed to The Athletic that the contract for the fight stipulates the bout must take place in the UK.

The fight organisers — Ring Magazine, which is owned by Al-Sheikh — are targeting a November date and Wembley Stadium will be favourite to stage the bout given it has the largest capacity venue in the UK.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has hosted three major Ring Magazine events including Fury’s April win over Arslanbek Makhmudov but it would reduce the number of people able to attend a bout which will be hugely anticipated even though both men are no longer world champions.

Anthony Joshua

Joshua, 36, is due to face Albanian Kristian Prenga on July 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Fury, 37, also wants a warm-up bout before the all-British showdown later this year but has yet to agree a deal. He has previously stated on his Instagram account that he will fight in Dublin on August 1.

Frank Warren’s Queensberry are hosting an event that night at the 3 Arena but no confirmation Fury will feature has been made yet.

If both men come through the warm-up bouts unscathed then they will meet later this year with the highly-anticipated fight to be broadcast on streaming service Netflix.

Promoter Eddie Hearn confirms UK to host Joshua versus Tyson Fury fight

Promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that the Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury fight is contractually bound to take place in the United Kingdom, dismissing reports that the bout could be moved to the United States, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Hearn, who worked alongside Frank Warren to finalise the terms of the blockbuster heavyweight showdown, said the signed contract explicitly mandates a British location for the fight, which is expected to take place later this year.

The announcement comes after reports suggested American venues, including SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and sites in Las Vegas, had made substantial financial pitches to host the event.

Hearn moved quickly to shut down those claims, insisting that the legal framework governing the fight leaves no room for a change of location without full agreement from all parties involved.

Saudi financial backers and any outside investors cannot unilaterally alter the venue, with promotional companies holding equal say on such decisions under the terms of the contract.

Both fighters are expected to return to the ring over the summer before the headline winter showdown, with Fury’s camp already preparing for a bout in Dublin that will serve as a key stepping stone ahead of the main event.

The Joshua-Fury rivalry has been building for a decade, with the pair yet to finally settle their differences in the ring.

Crawford’s trainer names the Only Greatest boxing legend he wishes they fought before retiring

Terence Crawford, guided by coach Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre, fought 42 times undefeated before retiring late last year. Were there any fights left on the table?

The switch-hitter from Omaha, Nebraska, won world championships in five divisions – undisputed in two – to stake his claim as the best fighter of a generation. His swansong was a jump up in weight to beat Mexican icon Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Crawford is content in retirement and, unlike many of his peers, seems to find it easy to resist a return to the ring. Though his skill level is undeniable, one criticism that has been levelled at him, by the likes of Canelo and Ryan Garcia, is that his record does not include many elite names

Speaking on the Front Page podcast, ‘BoMac’ was asked if there were any fighters he wished Crawford could have faced in his career, perhaps to further cement his legacy, and named Manny Pacquiao without hesitation.

“Manny Pacquiao. That’d have been great.”

On why it didn’t happen, McIntyre claims promoter Bob Arum, who worked with both men when the fight made most sense, blocked it.

“Bob [Arum] just said it the other day. He stopped it because he knew how that fight was gonna come out. [Pacquiao] was a cash cow … He didn’t want to mess up that money.”

Anthony Joshua

Crawford has previously revealed that he pushed for a Pacquiao fight way back in 2015 when he was on his way to becoming super-lightweight world champion, and there were indeed other occasions in the years that followed where it could have made sense.

Though ‘Bud’ looks set to remain retired, Pacquiao’s career is on the opposite trajectory. The Filipino returned professionally last year, fighting to a draw against then WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios. This year, he plans to rematch Floyd Mayweather, though details on the event remain scarce.

The Reason Why Charlie Woods will not be on the bag for golf’s top-ranked junior player at next week’s U.S. Open.

Charlie Woods will not be on the bag for golf’s top-ranked junior player at next week’s U.S. Open. Jacksonville Beach’s Miles Russell announced his swing coach Ramon Bescansa would be his caddie at the 126th U.S. Open next week at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York in a teleconference on Friday, June 12

Russell, the No. 1 junior golfer in the AJGA Rolex Rankings, survived a 3-for-2 sudden death playoff to qualify on “Golf’s Longest Day” at BallenIsles Country Club’s East course on June 8 in Palm Beach Gardens.

Woods, a rising senior at the Benjamin School and son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, was Russell’s caddie for the 36-hole event.

Russell was complimentary of Woods’ impact as caddie and initially said he hoped his friend and fellow Florida State commit would available on the bag at the U.S. Open.

“We just walked and talked and laughed,” Russell said. “We had a bunch of fun and he helped me the most probably just by staying calm, taking my mind off what was going on.

“That’s a pretty stressful day and if you have somebody on your bag that you don’t want to spend all day with, it’s going to make it that much harder.”

It was a common sentiment among the junior golfers in Monday’s U.S. Open qualifier in Palm Beach Gardens.

Royal Palm Beach’s Giuseppe Puebla, 17, qualified for the U.S. Open and tied with PGA Tour veteran Ben Silverman for the day’s best overall score. He selected his friend Hampton Beebe of West Palm Beach to man the bag.

Charlie Woods

“It’s such a long stressful day that I think you want a familiar face on the bag,” Puebla said. “Just someone that you can rely on. If it’s someone you don’t know, you’re kind of trucking the whole day and just trying to stay alive. To have someone who is close to you is pretty nice.”

Beebe, an Auburn golf signee and reigning FHSAA state champion, is unlikely to be available to caddie for Puebla at the U.S. Open due to his own playing schedule.

As of Friday morning, Beebe and Woods are in the field as players at Florida’s 109th Amateur Championship in Jupiter. Beebe shot 3-under in the first round and is tied for fourth place while Woods shot 8-over and is tied for 112th.

“I’ll beat him” Former Joshua opponent vows to ‘mess up the plans’ if he faces Tyson Fury next

Tyson Fury is gearing up for an August outing, ahead of his eventual showdown with Anthony Joshua, touted for November.

Now, one opponent who has been linked to a clash with ‘The Gypsy King’ has promised to ‘ruin Fury’s plans’, if given the opportunity

Fury ended a 16-month spell of inactivity by outpointing Arslanbek Makhmudov back in April, before making a beeline for Joshua in a post-fight interview and demanding a long-awaited fight with his perennial rival.

Since then, it appears as though terms have been agreed, but the event still hinges on both men being successful in their respective ‘tune-up’ bouts, with ‘AJ’ scheduled to fight Albania’s Kristian Prenga on Saturday, July 25.

For Fury, an opponent is yet to be announced ahead of a reported August bout, but former unified heavyweight champion and Joshua conquerer, Andy Ruiz Jr, has been mentioned as one potential dance partner.

Speaking to iFL TV, ‘The Destroyer’ vowed that he would ruin Fury’s plans and take his position in a fight with Joshua, if selected as his August opponent.

“I hope so [that I get the Tyson Fury fight], but if they are smart, they wouldn’t take it. What I have been telling everybody is, ‘if I get that fight with Tyson Fury, you best believe; tell Eddie [Hearn], tell Turki [Al-Alshikh], tell everybody that I am going to mess up the plans’, because I am gonna win that damn fight.

Anthony Joshua

“Best believe that I am going to be the one ending up fighting Anthony Joshua, we are going to have that trilogy.”

Ruiz then went on to reveal his hitlist, where he added Deontay Wilder’s name into the mix, keen for a big fight next, despite being winless since September 2022.

“I would love to fight Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua or [Deontay] Wilder. All of those big fights that we are supposed to make, I want to make ‘em now. Now, I am ready, I am hungry, I want a piece of that pie.”

News on Fury’s opponent is expected imminently, with another Albanian heavyweight believed to be in the running.

“Let’s make that clear”Former world champion says he signed for Gervonta Davis rematch but “they chose not to”

Gervonta Davis is set to return to action later this year, but one former opponent has now revealed that he had signed for a rematch with ‘Tank’, only for the three-division world champion to then have a change of heart

Davis has not won a fight in almost two years, with his most recent outing coming against former WBA super-featherweight world champion Lamont Roach Jnr back in March 2025, where he retained both his WBA lightweight crown and undefeated record by the skin of his teeth – lucky to escape with a draw.

External issues have since kept Davis away from the ring and that inactivity has caused the Baltimore knockout artist to be downgraded from WBA champion to ‘champion-in-recess’.

In order to regain the full world title, Davis will need to overcome 21-year-old mandatory challenger Floyd ‘Kid Austin’ Schofield, with that fight having been ordered by the World Boxing Association.

Speaking with FightHype, recent foe Roach has now revealed that he signed for a rematch with Davis following their draw, blaming the 31-year-old for the lack of a second fight.

“Obviously that is the rematch that I want, they chose not to do the rematch, just so that everyone knows. We were ready, we signed our contract, we did our business to make the rematch happen – the other side didn’t. So let’s just make that clear.

Anthony Joshua

“Other than that, I am not too worried about it. I am not hanging my hat on a Gervonta Davis rematch, I did what I was supposed to do that night in the ring, I should have got the victory but it is what it is, life goes on, man, and I am going to move on to bigger and better things.”

Roach will compete for the vacant WBC lightweight world title when he fights William Zepeda on Saturday, August 1. Victory in that bout could tee up an intriguing unification and rematch with Davis, if the latter is able to overcome Schofield in the autumn

Top-ranked junior Miles Russell secured his first U.S. Open with his friend, Charlie Woods, on the bag during Golf’s Longest Day on June 8

Miles Russell had a little help from his friend, Charlie Woods. The top-ranked junior earned a spot in his first-ever U.S. Open during Golf’s Longest Day with his friend, Tiger Woods’ son and fellow golfer, as his caddie for the tournament on Monday, June 8

Russell is the No. 10 amateur in the world and one of two 17-year-olds to punch his ticket to the U.S. Open during the one-day, 36-hole final qualifying event in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He survived a bogey on the first playoff hole and grabbed the fourth spot in the major championship.

Charlie, 17, who is one of Russell’s close friends, shares an agent with the American amateur golf standout and is expected to join him at Florida State University in Fall 2027 as members of the Seminoles’ golf team.

After shooting a 6-under total and surviving a three-for-two playoff to land a spot in the U.S. Open, Russell spoke with media at the BallenIsles Country Club East Course about the advantage of having Charlie by his side.

“It kept it so light,” Russell shared via the Golf Channel. “It’s the first time I’ve had a buddy on the bag. I really like it, not talking much golf, just having a good time.”

Russell then hinted at whether he’d have Charlie on the bag for him at Shinnecock Hills later this month, saying, “We’ll see what he’s doing. To be determined.”

Tiger Woods

The men’s U.S. Open takes place from June 18 to June 21. The tournament will be held at the historic Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., for a sixth year.

Charlie is the son of Tiger and Elin Nordegren, and was born on Feb. 8, 2009. From a young age, the rising athlete showed interest in athletics, with his dad saying that the only thing he wanted to do was play sports as a little boy.

With the help of the golf legend, Charlie got an early start to his golfing career, not only watching from the sidelines but also training alongside the pros. By the time he was 11, he was already on the golf course, winning competitions against other young athletes.

In 2020, the father-son golfing duo competed in their first tournament together, playing in the PNC Championship in Orlando — where fans noticed they had incredibly similar mannerisms. After the event, Woods expressed his gratitude for the opportunity.

“I don’t think words can describe it. Just the fact that we were able to have this experience together, Charlie and I,” he told reporters at the time, adding, “It’s memories for a lifetime.”

In February 2026, Charlie announced that he’d be continuing his golf career by playing for Florida State after his high school graduation.

“Excited to announce my commitment to play golf at Florida State University — go Noles!” he wrote in an Instagram post shared on Feb. 10.

Updates: Gervonta Davis edging closer to a fight for the former’s onetime WBA lightweight title, according to reports.

Gervonta Davis and Floyd Schofield Jr. are edging closer to a fight for the former’s onetime WBA lightweight title, according to reports.

The champion, who last fought a March 2025 draw against Lamont Roach Jr., has been plagued by legal matters outside the ring

But, per Boxing Scene, ‘Tank’ could be close to securing a shot at his old belt against the unbeaten star, who was last out himself a year ago.

Then, Schofield defeated Tevin Farmer, just months after he was forced to withdraw from a WBC challenge against Shakur Stevenson.

Both parties, represented by Premier Boxing Champions and Golden Boy Promotions, are thought to by eyeing a September or October date.

Schofield’s father, Floyd Schofield Sr., had previously suggested no discussions were underway between camps due to matters with Davis.

The latter was stripped in January of his belt and designated champion-in-recess, with the star needing to settle on a bout sooner rather than later.

Gervonta Davis

If ‘Tank’ is unable to agree terms with Schofield, the latter will be elevated to the full title by the WBA in his place, capping his rise to the summit.
