Boxing Star George Groves Floats Bold Plan for Fury vs Joshua Battle

The former super middleweight champion has been outspoken on the subject, with Groves pleading with Fury and AJ to fight this year.

A very unlikely scenario now, but with Fury mounting a return and Joshua likely ready to fight by December, a glimmer of hope for the all-British clash still looms.

However, both men’s focuses are on very different fights with the ‘Gypsy King’ eyeing an Oleksandr Usyk rematch and Watford’s own looking towards a Jake Paul crossover clash.

‘Saint George’, though, is still adamant that both men should be focused on one another instead of repeating fights.

Speaking to Escapist Magazine, the 37-year-old disregarded an Usyk fight for either man.

He said: “Do I want to see Usyk vs Fury again? No. There is no point in that fight. They’re playing for best-of-five at this point.

“He (Usyk) soundly beat Fury. Almost knocked him out the first time, didn’t he? He soundly beat Joshua.”

Instead, he proposed a ‘super exciting’ concept for a potential British heavyweight bout.

“The only fight now for Fury is Joshua. I think, have one and be done. I don’t think we need this rematch,” he said.

“Do it over five rounds. Just make it super exciting, rapid fire. I think Usyk has completed boxing and he should be done.”

Fury seemed to be acting cheeky. He probably wasn’t being serious, especially since he agreed that maybe he would just race horses from now on. While a return is still on the table, it does sound like Fury will only actually come back if it’s against Usyk or Joshua. Whether that materializes is anyone’s guess.

In an interview with TalkSport, he cautiously responded to the news.

Allen said: “Yeah, it’s difficult because it’s hard not to look at that.

“But Makhmudov would be the best win of my career. People keep telling me all you’ve got to do is hit him to the body and take him a few rounds. I’m not Agit Kabayel, I wish I were Agit Kabayel.”

Parker is waiting on Usyk’s next move, and Wilder is looking for his next rival after stopping Tyrrell Herndon in the seventh round of his return bout.

“I’m not Tyson Fury, I’m not Oleksandr Usyk, I am Dave Allen, I’m not a bad fighter, but Arslanbek Makhmudov is a big ask for me,” he said.

Hearn has had Jake Paul discussions for the Watford fighter for next year, but with established heavyweight names lining up as potential suitors for his first fight back, it could be the Doncaster heavyweight’s turn next year.

While maintaining caution on concrete promises, he said: “Yes, I had close to an hour with Nakisa earlier this week… We kind of went through the contractual points, and there aren’t really any major barriers to make this fight.

“I want to make this clear, I am not calling for this, or we are targeting this fight.”

However, Hearn gave his thoughts on the proposed contest itself and the belief of the American.

“I think the fight is a mismatch, I think AJ destroys him, but if Jake Paul wants this fight and he is serious, then the fight will happen,” he said.

“This really comes down to Jake’s beliefs slash delusions. I said to Nakisa, ‘This is dangerous’.”

While he has competed as a cruiserweight throughout the majority of his career, the influencer famously fought heavyweight icon Mike Tyson in the glamour division of the sport.

Joshua, though, has had some great successes when facing eight opponents around the 220-230 lb mark, with seven stoppage wins, including a signature victory over Alexander Povetkin.

However, he has faced defeat to Oleksandr Usyk twice, who was within the weight but, it has to be said, Paul is not at the skills level of the Ukrainian magician.

What the weight does show, though, is the ability to take a shot; most of the aforementioned opponents, besides Povetkin and Usyk, didn’t make it past the third round.

So, for a novice like the former Disney Channel star, who hasn’t tasted real heavyweight power, it could be a very difficult night in the ring.

Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach’s rematch is set to be rescheduled again. Promoter PBC were hoping to stage the sequel on August 16 in Las Vegas.

However, the bout is now expected to be pushed back by one to two weeks.

According to Ring Magazine, organisers are now targeting August 23 or August 30 in Sin City.

Davis was arrested on Friday for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend on June 15 in Florida.

PBC hadn’t officially announced August 16, nor had they confirmed the undercard, although it was widely reported that they intended to stage the event on that day.

The initial plan was to hold the fight on June 21 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Speaking with GQ back in 2020 Hearn was left shocked when asked about becoming a football agent.

“Do you know what? I’ll just say it. Me and AJ are talking about doing it.

“We’ve looked at it for a while and he mentioned it to me the other day and he said: ‘You know how to represent athletes, you can use my brand and my name, I know a lot of the players, we go out’.

“‘You know how to build a career on the pitch and off the pitch commercially, so what do you think?’

Why Hearn moving into football makes sense

Hearn is one of boxing’s most famous faces despite never putting on the gloves, helping take the sport to a whole new level after inheriting his father Barry’s empire.

Assisting him on the way has been Joshua’s undoubted star power, while recent agreements with the sporting wing of Saudi Arabia’s government has seen cash flow into the sport like never before.

Hearn also has football experience too, from when his father was the chairman of Leyton Orient from 1995 to 2014.

He has since registered three wins, and despite a less-than-favourable run of form, Yoka has great pedigree, having beaten big-name heavyweight contenders Filip Hrgovic, Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker as an amateur, making him a tricky proposition for the former unified heavyweight champion.

Since his knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in September last year, Joshua has undergone minor surgery to his elbow and is looking to come back at the end of the year, according to his promoter, Eddie Hearn.

Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh has also weighed in on Joshua’s future and said that before he and Fury potentially face off next year they both need a tune-up fight, having both lost in their last outing.

He told The Boxing Voice: “Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury next year, we are trying to do it and we are thinking about it. I need to have for each one, a tune-up fight first.

“Why? Because they are both coming off losses. It’s to build it up.”

While he’s never seen the 37-year-old controlled in the ring, it is also his mind that gives him a huge competitive edge in the bout.

“There are so many different things you can talk about, but from a psychological standpoint, who is fresher, who is meaner, and who wants it more, that’s going to come into play,” he said.
