Tiger Woods’ son Charlie Woods Continues to Impress With Strong Showing at Junior PGA Championship in West Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE — Charlie Woods entered the Junior PGA Championship and started slow, just cracking the top 50 on Tuesday at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette.

Woods would prove to doubters, if there were any, that he could hold his own on the big stage just over a week after being cut in the U.S. Amateur Championship in Dallas.

While the final result wasn’t what Woods had desired on Friday, it still sends a message that golf’s famous teenager could play the sport at an elite level.

Woods finished the Junior PGA Championship 9-under-par and tied for ninth after shooting a 74 on Friday afternoon.

His top nine finish gives him an automatic invite to next year’s Junior PGA Tournament at Fields Range in Frisco, Texas.

Woods also has a chance to be a captain’s pick for the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team which will be announced Tuesday.

While Woods wasn’t made available for media post match on Friday, there were plenty of compliments shared in his direction about his game by 2025 Junior PGA Championship winner Lunden Esterline.

“I had fun playing with him and Pennson (Badgett),” Esterline said. “They were both good guys.”

Three bogies and a double bogey on 15 ultimately hampered the 16-year-old from Jupiter, Florida.

His putting didn’t carry the same sharpness on the greens at Ackerman-Allen Course where he’d birdied nine times the day before.

Woods faced an uphill battle entering Friday tied at -12 against Esterline who was -19.

Winning the Junior PGA Championship was feasible for Woods but he needed to replicate his performance from Thursday to catch Esterline.

While the PGA Championship is a major held in May, the Jr. PGA Championship is held at the end of July or the beginning of August. While winning the event is already an accomplishment, the bigger prize is that the golfers who finish in the top two, automatically qualify for the Junior Ryder Cup Team.

The 16-year-old Charlie Woods is competing at the 2025 Jr. PGA Championship. Through the first three rounds, Woods is sitting in second place with a 12-under. He trails Lunden Esterline, who takes a 19-under into the final round of the tournament. Woods will play one final round on Friday at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana, to try to notch his first junior major win, as well as qualify for the Jr. Ryder Cup team.

1:45 p.m. — Woods tallied a bogey on No. 14. He moves to 11-under for the tournament. Still, a very good score, but with four holes left and four strokes to make up to join the junior Ryder Cup team, time is running out.

1:15 p.m. — Woods picks up a birdie on No. 12. He has plenty more work to do in the last six holes, but it’s a positive step.

12:53 p.m. — Woods opens the back frame with a bogey on No. 10. He is still at 12-under and in sole possession of sixth place on the leaderboard. Second place has moved to 16-under.

12:27 p.m. — Woods bogeyed the ninth hole. He drops into a tie for sixth place heading into the back nine. The leader is at 20-under, and second place is at 15-under. Woods has work to do on the final nine of the tournament.

12:11 p.m. — Woods saved par on No. 8 with an impressive shot out of the trees. He is still tied for fourth at 13-under.

11:45 a.m. — Woods picked up a much-needed birdie on the fifth hole, his first of the day.

11:17 a.m. — Unfortunately for Woods, he has notched four pars in a row. While it is good that he is staying steady, he has now dropped into a tie for fourth place and will need to get some birdies to have a shot at staying in the top two.

10:45 a.m. — Woods started his day with back-to-back pars. Pennson Badgett, who was tied with Woods entering the day at 12-under, is two-under to begin the day, so Woods is in a tie for third.

Woods has never competed in the event.

He said after his round that he’s hoping to control his own destiny with a strong finish Friday.

“It was so much fun,” Woods said of his third round, according to the Lafayette Journal & Courier. “I had a pretty fun chip on 16, but I just enjoyed being out there, having fun and hopefully I have a good chance of winning tomorrow.”

Woods endured a mixed round Thursday. He had three runs of back-to-back birdies and made nine birdies altogether, but he mixed in four bogeys.

“My round was pretty up and down, and it gave me a heart attack out there,” Woods said, per the Journal & Courier. “But nine birdies is pretty good. A couple of three-putts, I made a few mistakes today but overall pretty solid round. Pretty good position going into tomorrow.”

A rising junior at the Benjamin School in Palm Beach, Florida, Woods won the AJGA’s Team TaylorMade Invitational in May. He missed the cut at the recent U.S. Junior Amateur. He has not yet made a college commitment.

Lunden Esterline leads the Junior PGA at 19 under after carding a third-round 66. Esterline, from Andover, Kansas, is a 2027 Auburn commit.

Pennson Badgett is tied with Woods in second after shooting a 67 on Thursday. Badgett, from Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, is a 2026 Tennessee commit.

Charlie Woods is in the field this week for the PGA of America’s premier annual junior golf event.

Woods, a rising junior at the Benjamin School and son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, will play the 49th Boys & Girls Junior PGA Championships from July 29-Aug. 1 at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The Junior PGA Championships are comprised of two 72-hole stroke play tournaments for boys and girls junior amateur golfers. This year’s boys and girls tournaments will each feature 156 golfers, respectively.

First round play is scheduled for Tuesday with the boys tournament on Purdue University’s Ackerman-Allen Course and the girls tournament on the Kampen-Cosler Course.

The tournament will cut to the top 60 plus ties after Wednesday’s second round. It will cut down to the top 30 plus ties after the third round on Thursday.

The Junior PGA Championships were first hosted in 1976 and have a long history in Palm Beach County.

From 1980-2000, the event was hosted PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens in all but two years. In 1990, Tiger Woods finished runner-up to Fort Lauderdale’s Chris Couch at PGA National.

Previous tournament winners include major champions Trevor Immelman and David Toms.

Woods will begin the first round at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday on hole No. 10 of Purdue’s Ackerman-Allen Course.

He is paired with New York’s Jackson Ormond and fellow Floridian Tyler Mawhinney.

Woods will begin the second round at 7:41 a.m. Wednesday on hole No. 1 of Purdue’s Kampen-Cosler Course.

The tournament will have a stroke-play format, similar to most professional events. The top 60 players plus ties will make the cut after 36 holes and play the final two rounds to determine the champion.

A year ago, Baylor Larrabee won the event at the Congressional Country Club. He is currently on the UCLA golf team and cannot defend his title at Purdue because he is no longer age eligible.

The girls’ event will be played simultaneously on Purdue University’s Kampen-Cosler Course. It will feature the same characteristics as the boys’ tournament, and the No. 2-ranked player in the country, Asterisk Talley, leads the field.

His dad has 82 professional wins, tied with Sam Snead for the most ever. Fifteen of those victories have come in majors, and his last major win was the unforgettable 2019 Masters.

Tiger, who has not won a tournament since the 2019 Zozo, is recovering from a ruptured Achilles he sustained just weeks before this year’s Masters. In 18 official events since finishing tied for ninth at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open, his best finish was a tie for 37th at the 2020 PGA Championship.

Tiger, for the most part, stood in the thick of the crowd, leaning against a tree or taking a knee when there was a lull in the action.

DALLAS — The few dozen fans, parents and coaches huddled under shade trees and congregated on the patio outside Brook Hollow Golf Club on Monday afternoon, the first day of the U.S. Junior Amateur in Dallas.

Can you blame them? It wasn’t quite 100 degrees, but felt like it, and the gusty south winds were like a furnace fan, blowing down Brook Hollow’s sloped fairways toward the clubhouse.

All it took was a 16-year-old walking to the practice green to liven things up.

Charlie Woods’ arrival for his 2:03 p.m. tee time got the crowd venturing into the sun near the 10th tee, his first hole of the day. And if someone didn’t know it was that Woods labeled on the back of his caddie’s vest, they found out by the time Charlie stepped to the tee.

Down to his left, among the gallery of around 100, was a 15-time major winner who looked the part, donning a blue and white striped shirt and blue golf pants.

It’s hard to hide when you’re Tiger Woods.

But aside from being Tiger, he wasn’t much different than the other parents and supporters Monday at the biggest junior golf tournament in the world. He walked alongside Charlie’s threesome and looked fine doing it, with no apparent hobble or limp from the Achilles surgery he underwent in March. And even with Charlie’s group gathering the biggest gallery — and one of the few, if any, that required the USGA staff to deploy ropes to keep crowds at a distance — Tiger wasn’t hounded by fans.

“Is that him?” the occasional fan would whisper, and then snap a quick picture.

But Tiger, for the most part, stood in the thick of the crowd, leaning against a tree or taking a knee when there was a lull in the action.

It wasn’t the best day for Charlie, who struggled to an eight-over 43 on his front nine and finished 11-over for the day. Wayward shots off the tee got him off track early in the round, but he steadied things a bit down the stretch, and nearly holed out for eagle on his final hole.

But only a handful of golfers put together a solid round at a windy Brook Hollow, which was one of two courses hosting stroke play rounds Monday (Trinity Forest being the other). Of the 28 players under par in the tournament Monday, only four of them played at Brook Hollow.

One of Woods’ playing partners, Vanderbilt signee Michael Riebe, explained how difficult the conditions could be, even when playing well.

“It was a battle all day,” said Riebe, who battled to one-over to position himself within the projected cut line heading to Trinity Forest.

Riebe was two-over after nine, then slipped to three-over after a bogey on No. 2 (his 11th hole). But he took advantage of the Par 5 fifth, hitting his second shot to the far left side of the green and making a long putt for eagle. On his final hole, No. 9, Riebe missed the fairway and missed the green left, but got up and down for par.

“It was just really hard to be decisive (at Brook Hollow),” Riebe said. “You really have to commit to a certain line and a club, because the wind switches all the time. And with the wind blowing so much, it really challenges your focus. The heat — everything about it was hard.”
