When looking at the overall rise in viewership-excluding the 2025 Championship, which was postponed due to weather-ratings are up 18%. That suggests a very clear message: fans are tuning in to golf, and they are increasingly enthusiastic about the PGA Tour.

One of the reasons why I took this job is I really studied that fan engagement… They’re pulling three to four million viewers… the product it’s working and I think that the golf fans are voting with their remotes.

“There’s one thing I’ve learned over the years with Tiger Woods, never say never. I believe he is just the most extraordinary golfer we’ve ever had.

“Nicklaus’ record is better, he was my hero, but Tiger Woods brought a different level of golf to the world. He is capable of anything.”

Torrance admitted he’s unsure of the star’s current fitness levels but has witnessed him practising on the range before he speculated on Woods’ potential involvement in the upcoming Ryder Cup.

He added: “I don’t know about his fitness or his health, how good it is, but I still see him out on the range hitting balls. And I’d love to see him come back. Who knows, maybe he’ll be captaining the Ryder Cup if Bradley takes it. Who knows, if Bradley plays.”

Although Woods won’t be competing at The Open Championship at Portrush next week, he didn’t hesitate to offer advice to top contenders Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, emphasising the importance of ball control.

So, I played all 18 holes basically into the wind. And from hearing the stories of how players are able to drive into certain holes in there, I can get there. I don’t understand what is the fascination about this golf course. And then the next day, completely different… I’m like Ah, that’s why these bunkers were here. And so you know that’s most links golf courses are like that. And that’s what makes it so challenging. So much fun.”

Woods has a storied history at St. Andrews, making his Open debut there in 1995 (T68). He later claimed victory in 2000, becoming the youngest golfer to complete a career Grand Slam, and won again in 2005. However, his form at the course has been inconsistent, with a T23 finish in 2010 and missed cuts in 2015 and 2022.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Tiger Woods has shared similar thoughts on St. Andrews.
