Tiger Woods’ advice to son Charlie speaks volumes as Rory McIlroy referenced

Tiger Woods has urged his son Charlie to copy Rory McIlroy’s swing instead of his own, as the aspiring golfer looks to make a name for himself. Woods is renowned as the greatest golfer of his generation and perhaps even the best of all time, with the American having transcended the sport

A winner of 15 major championships, Woods’ legacy is far greater than any current golfer on the PGA or LIV circuits, with every professional having no doubt looked up to him as the benchmark at one point. However, the golfing giant doesn’t want his son to do the same, with Woods having instead told him to study videos of McIlroy on the course instead.

Commenting on his son’s progression, Woods said: “I told [Charlie], don’t copy my swing. Copy Rory’s.” A bold statement, but given Woods has been around for the entirety of McIlroy’s professional career and has seen how the Northern Irishman has developed, it’s not a surprise Woods speaks so highly of his competitor, but also friend.

Woods hasn’t been afraid to show a keen interest in his son’s career and has even carried the bag for him in the past. When quizzed about what it was like having one of the best-ever golfers caddie for him, Woods Jnr revealed: “It’s great. We just stay in our own little world, and we just take it one shot at a time, and he puts me in my place. He’s like, I’ll talk about the next T shot, he’s like, No, we’re hanging. This is the shot, we’re gonna focus on focus up, where this is where you know well today.”

Charlie will have another chance to watch McIlroy’s swing when the current green jacket holder competes at this week’s Open Championship. It’s the first time since 2019 that The Open has been held in Northern Ireland, with McIlroy hoping for a considerably better outing than that time around, given he missed the cut completely.

On his return to Portrush, McIlroy explained: “I think in 2019 I probably tried to isolate. I think it’s better for everyone if I embrace it. I think it’s better for me. It’s nice to be able to accept adulation, even though I struggle with it at times. But it’s also nice for the person that is seeing you for the first time in a few years. It just makes for a better interaction and not trying to hide away from it. I think it’s more of, embrace everything that’s going to come my way this week and not try to shy away from it or hide away from it. I think that’ll make for a better experience for everyone involved.”

Tiger Woods Reveals the One Habit of Son Charlie That He Just Can’t Stand – And It Might Surprise You!

Golf legend Tiger Woods might be full of admiration for his son Charlie Woods but there is one thing that irks him – Charlie’s constant cell phone use.

The 15-time major champion was seen in good spirits on Friday as he warmed up on the range alongside his young cub.

Charlie drew a hilarious reaction out of his father, who labelled his final shot in practice as “f***ing nasty”.

Tiger and Charlie competed in the Pro-Am and then attended a private party for all the entrants competing this week.

John Daly posted a photo of himself, his son and the Woods’ together last night (above).

It has been confirmed that Woods’ daughter Samantha Woods will be caddying for Dad this weekend.

Speaking to the media ahead of the 36-hole PNC Championship this weekend, Woods had nothing but glowing praise for his son.

The Golf Icon Delivered an Unexpected Answer When Questioned About His Son’s Progress on the Course

In the world of golf, very few names carry the same weight as Tiger Woods. A living legend, Woods has not only redefined the sport but inspired an entire generation of players. So naturally, when his son, Charlie Woods, began appearing on the scene—swinging clubs with technique and confidence far beyond his years—the sports world took notice. Comparisons were drawn, expectations mounted, and questions began to surface: Could Charlie follow in his father’s footsteps?

But during a recent interview, the elder Woods delivered an answer that no one quite expected.

When asked about his son’s development and whether he believed Charlie was on track to become a professional golfer, Tiger paused for a moment. His response was calm, heartfelt, and surprisingly grounded.

“I’m proud of him, but he’s not out here to fill my shoes,” Woods said. “He’s writing his own story—and golf is just one chapter of it.”

This candid statement struck a different tone from the usual proud-parent narrative often heard in the sports world. Coming from someone whose every swing has been scrutinized, analyzed, and idolized, Tiger’s emphasis on independence over legacy was refreshingly human.

A Different Kind of Fairway

In recent years, Charlie Woods has wowed audiences with his smooth swing and undeniable poise, especially during appearances at the PNC Championship alongside his father. The chemistry between them has charmed fans—Charlie, mirroring his father’s mannerisms, stride, and even club twirls. But Tiger has been cautious about the pressure his son might face growing up in his towering shadow.

“He’s got the passion,” Tiger noted, “but he also has a life outside of golf. I want him to enjoy that too.”

It’s clear Tiger isn’t trying to mold Charlie into a carbon copy. In fact, the golf icon’s unexpected response highlights a deeper philosophy: success isn’t just about trophies, but about finding fulfillment on one’s own terms.

Living Under the Spotlight

Being the child of a sports superstar comes with its fair share of challenges. Every round Charlie plays is watched with a mixture of awe and intense scrutiny. Media outlets buzz with commentary, YouTube videos rack up millions of views dissecting his form, and the public often labels him as “the next Tiger” before he’s even entered adulthood.

Yet Tiger Woods remains adamant that Charlie’s journey be his own. “We talk more about school, life, and character than scorecards,” he said in the same interview. “The world will always be watching, but I want him to look in the mirror and be proud of who he is—on or off the course.”

He knows firsthand the cost of fame, the pitfalls of pressure, and the loneliness that sometimes accompanies greatness.

Charlie Woods Prevails in Playoff to Qualify for U.S. Junior Amateur Championship

Charlie Woods qualified for his second straight U.S. Junior Amateur Championship with a clutch playoff win.

With his famous father, 15-time major winner Tiger Woods in attendance, the 16-year-old Woods held off two other golfers to claim the final qualifying spot Thursday at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla.

Charlie Woods shot a 1-under 71 but bogeyed the final hole to fall into a fifth-place tie with Oscar Crowe and Matthew Marigliano, forcing the playoff.

Woods will join the top four finishers — Arth Sinha (67), Lucas Gimenez (68), Sohan Patel (69) and Wylie Inman (69) — at the U.S. Junior Amateur from July 21-26 at Trinity Forest in Dallas. Crowe and Marigliano will be alternates.

Tiger Woods, 49, was a three-time U.S. Junior Amateur champion before going on to win 82 PGA Tour titles.

Charlie Woods, who missed the cut in last year’s Junior Amateur at Oakland Hills in Michigan, won his first junior tournament title last month at the Team TaylorMade Invitational in Bowling Green, Fla.

Like his father, Charlie Woods is making headlines for playing golf. So much so that fans are wondering when he’ll play next.

Tiger Woods’ son − and his famous classmate − recently competed in one of South Florida’s top junior golf tournaments. On June 24, Charlie Woods and Kai Trump, the eldest grandchild of President Donald Trump, played the second and final round of the 41st Nicklaus Junior Championship at Tequesta Country Club.

Named after golf’s most decorated major champion, the Nicklaus Junior is an annual tournament organized by the South Florida PGA and the Palm Beach County Golf Association. The two-day competition was split between the Bear’s Club in Jupiter and the Tequesta Country Club. Previous winners include Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger.

Full Heartwarming Tiger Woods Moment With Son Charlie Woods Is Turning Heads

Charlie Woods continues to build his presence in the golf world. The 16-year-old competed this week in the 47th Junior North & South Amateur at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

On hand to support him was his father, golf legend Tiger Woods. During one stretch, Charlie drained a long putt, giving him four birdies in five holes. After sinking it, he turned to Tiger and joked, “I don’t want to hear it,” referring to his dad’s course-side critiques. Tiger laughed and replied, “Good putt,” and the two shared a moment of laughter.

That interaction quickly caught fans’ attention. NUCLR GOLF on X posted the following exchange: “Tiger and Charlie shared a laugh after he drained a long bomb for birdie.”

The exchange lit up social media, with fans weighing in on the father-son bond and Charlie’s growing game.

Still, the overall mood was celebratory. Tiger and Charlie were last seen in the spotlight together at the PNC Championship, and their shared joy at Pinehurst added to the growing list of viral Woods family moments.

Charlie held his own at the event, finishing just outside the top 10 with a final-round 1-under 71. He shot 72 on both Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 8 in the first two rounds. Davis Wotnosky took home the title at 10-under par.

As for Tiger, the 15-time major champion is now 49 years old and hasn’t won a major since 2019. He has yet to play in a PGA Tour event in 2025, after making five appearances in 2024.

Like Father Like Son, Tiger Woods’ Son Posts Another Strong Finish Shows Up Dad

The 2025 season continues to go from strength to strength for Charlie Woods, who just completed another strong performance in the junior division. It’s also excellent news that his legendary father, Tiger Woods, was following him throughout the event

Woods competed between June 30 and July 2 in the Junior North & South Amateur. This is the 47th edition of the prestigious tournament hosted by Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, competing both boys and girls.

Charlie finished with a 54-hole score of 1-over that earned him a tie for 12th in a field that began with 94 players.

The younger Woods improved throughout the tournament, starting with a 2-over 72 opening round on Pinehurst No. 2. Charlie carded four birdies and six bogeys on this day.

A day later, it was time to play Pinehurst No. 8, and Charlie fared much better, with his only major complication being a double bogey on the 10th hole. He added three birdies and a bogey to his card for an even-par 72 for the round.

The final round was also played on Pinehurst No. 8. Charlie started poorly, bogeying his first three holes and adding another bogey on the 8th and a birdie on the 6th to make the turn at 3-over for the day and five over for the week.

However, he managed to find his best golf of the tournament on the back nine, where he carded five birdies and a bogey, finishing the round at 1-under and bringing his tournament score to 1-over.

Tiger Woods Seen Following Charlie

A video circulating on social media shows Charlie exchanging words with Tiger Woods after making one of his back nine birdies. Tiger can be seen riding in a golf cart, with no details of his current health being revealed.

charlie woods

However, the mere fact that the 15-time major champion is following his son around a golf tournament can undoubtedly be interpreted as a good sign. As you may recall, Tiger also followed Charlie around during the Florida Amateur Championship just a few weeks ago.

These have been the clearest signs of Tiger Woods’ recovery since injuring his Achilles tendon last March.

The Junior North & South Amateur is not sanctioned by the American Junior Golf Association, so Charlie won’t be able to improve his current ranking (14th). However, the result at Pinehurst definitely continues his streak of strong results, led by his victory at the TaylorMade Junior Invitational last May.

At Just 16 years old Charlie Woods’ game is affected by pressure that not even his father Tiger Woods experienced

At just 16 years old, Charlie Woods is navigating a world of expectations that most professional athletes don’t face until well into their careers.

As the son of golf icon Tiger Woods, Charlie competes not only against the field but also against a relentless wave of comparisons, fanfare, and pressure, all magnified by today’s hyper-connected media landscape.

This week, Charlie teed up at the prestigious North & South Junior Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina. The tournament, a significant milestone on the junior golf circuit, was another step in his development.

Yet, unlike other junior competitors, Charlie’s every swing was tracked by cameras, and his group received featured coverage, a rare honor typically reserved for the tournament leaders. Even though Charlie wasn’t in contention early on, the Woods name alone drew media and spectator attention.

Tiger woods

His performance started shakily with three consecutive bogeys in the final round, briefly pushing him outside the top 30. But Charlie showed resilience, posting a final-round 1-under 71 on Pinehurst No. 8 to tie for 12th place at 1-over for the tournament.

It was a commendable result considering the circumstances, but few 12th-place finishers would draw so much national focus.

The social media spotlight: A pressure tiger never faced

While Tiger Woods carved out his legacy in the 1990s under traditional media scrutiny, Charlie is growing up in a radically different era.

Constantly followed by camera phones, social media accounts, and viral expectations, Charlie faces a pressure that his father has acknowledged he never encountered.

“The type of attention is very different than what I had. We didn’t have social media. We didn’t have camera phones. We didn’t have any of that,” Tiger Woods reflected.

Charlie Woods

Earlier this year at the Cognizant Classic pre-qualifier in Hobe Sound, Florida, Charlie‘s round was derailed by chaos. Fans ignored ropes, followed him on the fairway, shouted during his backswing, and even chased after his golf ball.

One even tried to get him to sign a copy of his father’s book mid-round. Unsurprisingly, the distractions impacted his game, and he shot a 16-over 86, failing to advance.

This isn’t just about golf-it’s about managing a level of public intrusion that would test even the most seasoned pros. Charlie continues to show grace under pressure, but the environment he competes in is anything but normal for a teenager.

Other legacy kids know the struggle

Charlie isn’t alone in this experience. John Daly II, son of two-time major winner John Daly, shared a similar sentiment on the Identity Sports Podcast.

Daly Jr. knows firsthand how unfair comparisons and public expectations can derail a young athlete’s confidence. Like Charlie, he was often judged not by his own progress but by the towering reputation of his father.

Despite the setbacks and the noise, Charlie Woods continues to improve. He’s shown poise in elite junior tournaments and has already demonstrated the kind of mental toughness that suggests a promising future in golf.

Woods returned from the delay with a bogey but gathered momentum with birdies on three straight holes and five of the last eight overall to rise into the Top 12.

Pinehurst’s No. 2 has hosted five major championships, including four U.S. Open championships, most recently in 2024.

It is considered an “anchor site” for the United States Golf Association and will host four more U.S. Open tournaments through 2050.
