Judge orders Gervonta Davis to jail after boxer spent house arrest at Four Seasons, luxury condo

Boxing champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis was serving out his home detention sentence for a 2020 hit-and-run at a Four Seasons Hotel and a $3.4 million high-rise penthouse that he bought in South Baltimore, prompting a judge on Thursday to order him to immediately be taken into custody.

Baltimore Circuit Judge Althea M. Handy said she gave permission for Davis, 28, who had been living in Parkland, Florida, to do the house arrest at the home of his longtime coach and trainer, Calvin Ford, in Baltimore. She said she was never asked to change that location.

“The reason I didn’t want him in Florida is because this was not a holiday,” said Handy, who later added that she did not want Davis to be sitting by the pool or hanging out at the spa. “He was serving time. And I was being considerate enough to let him do it on home detention.”

The Baltimore Banner reviewed a recording of the court proceeding, which started after 5:15 p.m. The hearing neither appeared on the daily calendar for Baltimore Circuit Court nor was docketed in the Maryland Judiciary Case Search.

Throughout the hearing, Michael Tomko, Davis’ attorney, repeatedly told the judge to blame him.

Tomko said he and his client were caught off guard with the requirement to do the house arrest in Baltimore. Ford, though, has a one-bedroom home that could not accommodate the team that provides 24/7 security to Davis.

At one point, Tomko implored the judge to not punish Davis for having fame or money, adding that it’s sometimes hard for individuals to understand that “people can attack famous people or hurt them or not want them to fight or win.”

No one wanted him to live in the hotel, Tomko said. He said he worked with his client’s team to buy the condo as quickly as possible to move Davis to a safe location.

“I don’t think that Mr. Davis did anything wrong except listen to his lawyer,” he later added.

But Handy said Davis had plenty of time before his sentencing to find a place in Baltimore. She said she considered his safety when handing down the punishment, noting “he certainly didn’t do anything to impress me at his sentencing.”

Davis did not speak at the hearing.

Later, Handy revoked Davis’ home detention and ordered him to immediately begin serving the “remaining balance of his sentence.”

“Judge,” Tomko said, “how is that fair?”

AFTER the frustration of failing to land a rematch with Gervonta Davis, the next step in Lamont Roach Jr’s career looks set to be revealed in the coming days.

The WBA super-featherweight champion almost defied the odds and public expectations on March 1 when he earned a draw against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn. The 114-114, 113-115 (Roach), 114-114 scorecards were met with discontent, with many believing Roach deserved the win. The outcome may have been different had Roach been awarded a 10-8 round in the ninth, when Davis went to a knee from a jab. Referee Steve Willis initially looked set to administer an eight-count but changed his mind. Davis later claimed the knockdown was the result of hair product getting into his eyes.

A Davis-Roach rematch had been lined up for August, but the fight was scrapped after Davis was arrested in July for allegedly striking his ex-girlfriend. Last month, all charges against the 30-year-old were dropped.

Another twist followed soon after when Davis announced he would face Jake Paul in an exhibition on November 15.

Roach’s manager, Roberto Diaz, told Boxing News what “The Reaper” is hoping for next, amid rumours of a clash with Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz.

“He told me, when he realised the rematch wasn’t happening, ‘Go get me the biggest fight out there.’ He’s willing to fight anybody. He wanted Shakur [Stevenson]. There’s several names out there that I was like, ‘Wow, really?’

“Hopefully, we get the announcement soon and the fans will be very happy.”

Reaction to Davis vs. Paul has been largely negative.

Davis is regarded as a pound-for-pound talent and a multiple titleholder, yet has chosen to step away from the professional circuit to face a man who will enjoy significant height and weight advantages for a lot of money.

“When they made the announcement that he’s fighting Jake Paul it was sort of a little bit of a shock,” Diaz said.

“At the end of the day he’s one of the top names in boxing, one of the top draws in boxing. We saw it at the first fight. He showed up five hours late for the press conference, two hours late for the weigh-in. We got to dance to the beat that’s given. Until we win, until we knock him out, until we take it – go do your thing ‘Tank’. And we hope to see you next year so we can do it again.”

GERVONTA DAVIS has expressed his interest in an immediate rematch with Lamont Roach Jr, despite previously claiming that he would face a different opponent next.

‘Tank’ was taken the distance for only the third time in his career, with Roach, 25-1-2 (10 KOs) producing an assertive performance before suffering a controversial draw last Saturday.

The pair squared off on an absorbing encounter at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, headlining an Amazon Prime pay-per-view card.

But while Davis, 30-0-1 (28 KOs), was a firm favourite heading into their clash, the only fighter left feeling truly aggrieved by the judges’ scorecards was Roach.

In the ninth round, referee Steve Willis issued a count in response to Davis taking a knee, but then ruled it a no-knockdown shortly after the Baltimore bruiser sprung back to his feet.

Naturally, the incident has been a major point of criticism, with Roach ultimately being denied a 10-8 round that would have swung the result in his favour.

After retaining his WBA world lightweight title, Davis then told media members at his post-fight press conference that a rematch is unlikely to happen next.

In doing so, he also hinted that, despite wanting a second encounter with Roach, an opponent for his next outing has already been lined up.

But now, while responding to a post from ‘The Reaper’ on X, Davis has insisted that he is actively pursuing the rematch.

He wrote: “Your b**** ass just happy you didn’t get knocked out. Your dad was jumping up and down in the corner when yall made it to the 12 rd.

“And say no more. I’m pushing for the rematch.”
