Much-Hyped Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder Seems Failed; Bronze Bomber’s Upset Loss Changes Course of Heavyweight Boxing in 2024

One major upset last night changed the course of the entire heavyweight boxing division for 2024. In an unexpected twist of fate, Deontay Wilder lost the ‘Day of Reckoning’ fight at the hands of Joseph Parker. Going into the fight, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ was a big crowd favorite, but Parker wasn’t letting up, winning the fight via unanimous decision.

Interestingly, Wilder was widely believed to be the second-best after Tyson Fury. However, Parker’s brilliant performance changed that last night as he established himself as the top brass in the heavyweight division. Yet, that’s not the only change the heavyweight division will see. So, it begs the question – what about Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder? What are the repercussions of Wilder’s loss?

The fate of Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder

Prior to last night’s fight, plans were set in motion for Wilder to face Anthony Joshua on 9 March next year. However, the only condition was that both fighters must win their fights tonight. While Joshua bagged the victory via a fifth-round TKO against Otto Wallin, Wilder barely made it to the final round in the lopsided affair. So, it seems like the Joshua vs. Wilder fight is unlikely to happen!

Moreover, the Tuscaloosa resident even hinted at hanging up the gloves after the unexpected loss against Parker. In his post-match interview, Wilder stated: “I’m a happy fighter. I’ll be back, and if not, then it’s been a pleasure. I don’t know [if I still have the same fire I used to], a lot has calmed me down.” Plus, given his underwhelming performance, the best course of action for the heavyweight is to retire. However, this will reshape the heavyweight scene drastically.

The fate of heavyweight boxing in 2024

Before the upset, a fight between Joshua and Wilder was in the making for decades. So, with Wilder’s loss and the future fight falling apart, ‘AJ’ needs to find his next big opponent. What’s more, by defeating Wallin, Joshua just became the No. 2 contender in the IBF heavyweight rankings. Currently, Oleksandr Usyk holds the IBF title.

The Ukrainian also holds the WBA and WBO titles and is vying for a fight against Tyson Fury to obtain his WBC title and unify the division. So, if Usyk defeats Fury in their fight scheduled for 14 February next year, Joshua could possibly face the Ukranian for all his titles. Or, if Fury ends up winning the fight, Joshua could pursue him.

Eddie Hearn: I’m just going to go and vomit

If Wilder would have won the fight tonight, the March 9 clash would have been guaranteed, giving fans what they have wanted for years. However, after Wilder’s loss, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, was really disappointed with Wilder’s performance. “I’m just going to go and vomit…I said in the buildup – I don’t rate him…Wilder had no idea, no clue. He lost 120-108, he lost every round,” said Hearn.

Hearn went on to suggest that the fight was a one-sided affair, adding Wilder ruined the plans for a future fight between Wilder and Joshua. “It was the most one-sided heavyweight fight. I’ve seen he had no power in the back end of the fight, and listen, it’s ruined our plans,” said Hearn. He later added, “The future is not Deontay Wilder.”

Anthony joshua

Despite being the crowd favorite, Deontay Wilder’s absence from the ring really showed in his last night’s fight. According to his statement, it could also have been the last time people saw him in the ring. The repercussions of the loss will force Joshua to look for a better opponent, which might lead to a title clash next year or beyond. Did you watch last night’s event? What did you think of Parker’s performance?

Joshua Vs Wilder:  After  Elbow Surgery Eddie Hearn Called Team Wilder About long-awaited Anthony Joshua fight

Eddie Hearn has made contact with Deontay Wilder’s manager Shelly Finkel about a potential fight with the fit-again Anthony Joshua.
The London heavyweight, who recently underwent elbow surgery, is expected to return to the ring this autumn after taking a year out and this week insisted he is capable of “taking the division by storm.”
Across the pond, another former world heavyweight champion ended his own boxing exile by stopping Tyrrell Herndon in the seventh round of their fight in Wichita, Kansas. It was Wilder’s first outing for 12 months and, while not vintage Bronze Bomber, the victory was enough for him to blow off some cobwebs.
And no sooner are Joshua and Wilder back in the picture than discussions begun about finally putting them together in a fight.

There was a time when they were undefeated heavyweight world champions and it remains one of the biggest travesties of their generation that nobody managed to arrange a unification between them.

They are now deep into their 30s and approaching the end of their careers, but AJ’s long-term promoter Hearn still believes there is an appetite for Joshua-Wilder.
“I think it’s always going to be a big fight because it’s exciting, enticing and dangerous,” Hearn told The Ring.
Joshua, 35, a two-time heavyweight champion, is 28-4 (25 KOs) and ranked No.5 by The Ring while Wilder, 39, the former WBC king, is 44-4-1 (43 KOs) and is no longer in the top 10.
Hearn had suggested that another of his heavyweights, Dave Allen, could be an option for Wilder, too, but also brought up the possibility of him fighting Joshua during a conversation with Finkel.
Anthony joshuaHe said: “I spoke to Shelly Finkel because we were talking about a potential fight with Dave Allen. But we will see what’s next.
“Wilder seems to have a little plan of wanting to stay quite active and I think that’s a good thing for him and maybe that’s a fight that can materialise.”

Sam Alexis Woods’ state victory: Tiger Woods’ daughter helps school to FHSAA team championship

Sam Alexis Woods: Just as Tiger Woods in 2001, winning in Northeast Florida at The Players Championship, Just as Tiger did again in 2013, earning his second Players title at the same location.

So now that it’s 2025, and the dozen-year pattern has come around again, it’s the turn of a different Woods to lift a championship trophy in Jacksonville.

Sam Woods, daughter of the golfing legend, completed her high school athletic career by helping The Benjamin School of Palm Beach Gardens to the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 1A girls track and field team championship on May 10.

Competing at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium, some 9 miles from The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass where her father captured two titles in the PGA Tour’s flagship event, Sam Woods helped Benjamin to a second place and a fourth place in relays, worth 13 points.

That was enough for Benjamin (61 points) to outdistance Tallahassee Maclay (45 points) for the overall championship in Class 1A — and she did it 12 years to the day after the second round of Tiger Woods’ 2013 Players victory.

Inside Sam Woods’ state track meet

Woods, a senior, participated in four events for Benjamin.

While her two individual events didn’t score points — she came in 18th in the 100-meter hurdles and 17th in the 400 hurdles — she provided bigger contributions in the relays.

In the opening 4×800 relay, she ran the third leg and helped Benjamin finish in 9:32.40, behind only Providence (9:28.01) from Jacksonville.

And in the closing 4×400 relay, Woods handled the third leg again as Benjamin took fourth place in 4:01.83, behind Pahokee, Maclay and Lakeland Victory Christian.

The state championship is the second of 2025 for Sam Woods, who also started in central defense for Benjamin’s Class 2A girls soccer triumph over Episcopal School of Jacksonville. She scored the winning goal in the team’s district soccer tournament.

‘Most special day of my life’: world No 733 Tarvet enjoys limelight in Alcaraz defeat

Carlos Alcaraz: As a script it surely would have been rejected by Hollywood for being too outlandish. A 21-year-old British student, who has never played on the main tennis tour before, suddenly finds himself on Centre Court with 15,000 people cheering him on. And on the other side of the net is the Wimbledon champion.

Yet that was the situation that Oliver Tarvet, the world No 733 from St Albans, found himself in on Wednesday as he lined up to face the brilliant Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

And while there was no fairytale ending, with Tarvet losing 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 he left to a standing ovation and warm words from his illustrious opponent, who predicted that he could go on to achieve great things.

“Big praise to Oliver,” said Alcaraz. “Only his second match on the tour and I just love his game. Some great tennis. I had to be really focused and play my best tennis. If he keeps practising hard and playing at a professional level, I think he can go far.”

carlos alcaraz

It has been some journey. A week ago, nobody in tennis circles had heard of Tarvet, who studies communications and marketing at the University of San Diego.

After making the 5,482-mile trip to London to play in the Wimbledon qualifying tournament, he then had to win three matches to even make it to the main event. But having arrived at Centre Court, Tarvet looked right at home as he played his brand of attacking tennis from the off.

In one respect, Tarvet could not lose, because nobody expected him to beat Alcaraz. Yet, somehow, he also won by showing he belonged.

“There were a lot of nerves,” he said afterwards. “I woke up a couple times in the night from the adrenaline and in the car my heart rate was going quicker than it usually does. But a big emphasis was to enjoy, enjoy the moment and enjoy the opportunity, because it doesn’t come around too often. And I think I did a pretty good job of that.

“It’s not the result that I wanted, but it was definitely the most special day of my life.”

It would have been easy for Tarvet to be overawed. He was the lowest-ranked player in the entire draw and until last week, he had never played an opponent ranked higher than 367.

carlos alcaraz

Now he was facing a five-time grand slam winner, on the most famous court in the world. Many would have shrunk under the intensity of the experience and the power of Alcaraz’s groundstrokes. Yet Tarvet battled to the end.

The first set was surely the least one-sided 6-1 scoreline of the tournament. Tarvet had breakpoints in three of Alcaraz’s service games, only for the Spaniard to find incredible winner after winner.

Yet Tarvet refused to allow his spirit, or his level, to drop. There was an explosion of joy and hope when he broke to lead 2-0 at the start of the second set, and while he could not see it out, Alcaraz increasingly knew he was in a real match. It was a similar story in the third set, but Alcaraz just had a little more power and nous.

“I definitely had chances that should give me confidence that I was competing,” said Tarvet. “I just need to credit him. He plays the big points just incredibly well. And that’s the difference. I felt I was in the first set and yet I lost it 6-1. And it’s an intimidating place to be when you are hitting a second serve with Carlos Alcaraz standing there.”

carlos alcaraz

Tarvet is the latest of a growing number of British players who are using the US college system as a finishing school before turning professional. Both Cameron Norrie and Jacob Fearnley, who are both ranked inside the world’s top 70, have shown how it can work.

However, it also means that while the other players who made the second round here will earn at least £99,000, under US college rules he can only claim $10,000 (£7,290) in profit every year, as well as any expenses incurred during the events.

Not that Tarvet minds, given the memories he has made. “My goal for going into the first round of qualifying was just to play my brand of tennis,” he said. “Obviously it was a great opportunity for me. And I have proved that was worth that wildcard and that chance.”

carlos alcaraz

On the third day of action there were three more British victories with Sonay Kartal getting things under way by beating Viktoriya Tomova. Norrie followed suit with a surprise four-set victory over the 12th seed Frances Tiafoe. Late into the night Emma Raducanu also booked her place in the last 32 with a win over 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.

Novak Djokovic will not reflect until ‘on the beach with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’ ahead of hitting Wimbledon milestone

Novak Djokovic: After securing his spot in the third round of Wimbledon with a straight-sets victory over Dan Evans, Novak Djokovic said he does not “have time” yet to reflect on his illustrious career.
Djokovic, hunting a record 25th Grand Slam title, displayed a serving masterclass on Centre Court, the venue which has seen him crowned Wimbledon champion on seven occasions, to oust Evans despite a bright start from the Brit.
Now aged 38, Djokovic continued his run to the third round, 20 years on from making his first appearance at the All England Club. But when asked whether he reflects on his past, Djokovic said he would only begin to do so when sipping “margaritas on the beach” with his old rivals.
“I don’t pause to reflect,” he said. “I don’t have time. Being on the highest level on professional tennis requires a lot of dedication.
“I don’t play as much as I did before but the weeks I don’t play, I play at home with my kids. I don’t reflect fully on everything I have been through.
Novak Djokovic

“I would like to but I think that will come when I set the racquet aside and then sip margaritas on the beach with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and just reflect on our rivalry and everything.”
A 25th Grand Slam title would see Djokovic pull clear of his joint-record alongside Margaret Court, and he could well have been handed a banana skin in drawing Evans for the second round.
The Brit’s singles ranking took a hit last year when he decided to join forces with the retiring Andy Murray to play doubles at the Olympic Games, rather than defend his ATP 500 title at the Citi Open. Having once been on the cusp of breaking into the top 20 of the men’s game, Evans, now ranked No. 154, triumphed in the pair’s only meeting in Monte Carlo four years ago.
But Djokovic found parity in their head-to-head record with a comfortable second-round victory, cruising to a 6-3 6-2 6-0conclusion, and credited the “special atmosphere” on Centre Court, despite the overriding consensus from the home crowd being in support of Evans.
“A Brit in Britain is never easy to face,” Djokovic said. “Dan Evans can be causing a lot of trouble if you are not on your game which I think I was from the beginning to be honest.

The victory was Djokovic’s 99th at Wimbledon, and he will hunt a century against compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round.
On his chances of winning Wimbledon for an eighth time this month, he said: “If I play like today, I feel like I have a very good chance against anybody, really, on the Centre Court of Wimbledon, a place where I maybe feel the most comfortable on any court. Rod Laver Arena and Wimbledon Centre Court are the two courts where I’ve done so well throughout my career.
“I felt great physically, mentally sharp. Game-wise, I’m playing as well as I can, really, on grass. So hopefully I can keep it up.
“Of course, it’s great. You want to keep on playing this way. It can be only one day, one match. Tomorrow or in two days can be a different story. I don’t know. I’m trying to be cautious and keep it going. But yeah, aspirations and objectives are very high to go all the way.”

Wimbledon 2025: Rennae Stubbs Suggests The Main Reason Why Coco Gauff Lost in Wimbledon Round One

Coco Gauff: Ranked 42nd in the world, Yastremska pulled off a 7-6(7-3), 6-1 upset against WTA number two Gauff in London.

Gauff won the US Open after a Wimbledon first round loss back in 2023, with a repeat of that situation possible once more this year.

But the two-time Grand Slam champion is understandably disappointed with the result, although she isn’t the only female star to have suffered a shock exit.

Jessica Pegula fell in the first round to Elisabetta Cocciaretto, with former player Rennae Stubbs referencing the American in her analysis of Gauff’s defeat.

Speaking of Gauff, she said on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast: “Do I think she lost because of that [lack of preparation]?

“She sort of said in press she would approach things differently but I don’t think that was the issue. I think you could look at it and did it contribute? Maybe.

Coco gauff

“Because she did not have the prep that she needed on grass and I think that’s definitely possible that she did not have enough practice matches on grass.

“But I think this just came down to match up. I think if she played a Cocciaretto, I don’t think she would have liked Coco’s game like she liked Jessie’s game.

“Jess hits the ball really flat and hard into her hands. She is smaller in stature, the ball comes into her hitting zone. You have to always think about that.

“If Coco plays Petra Kvitova who is maybe not at her best and she is serving the ball to Coco’s backhand and Coco is getting her moving, Coco probably wins that match.

“When you think about Yastremska this is the biggest and worst match up for Coco in the first round. If Coco was confident coming in on grass, I still think that is a really hard match up.

“What does Yastremska do? She is the one, two, three maximum punch player. Bang with the return, bang with the second shot, serve plus one. She is not the type of person to rally for six or seven.

Coco gauff

“Pegula probably has a better chance against Yastremska because she is going to get the ball back harder and Yastremska’s ability to hit five great shots, very rare, two or three very good.

MORE NEWS : French Open, Coco Gauff Becomes First American Woman Since

“So you have two problems. Coco’s forehand on clay gets up high and out of people’s hitting zones. She has time to run balls down on clay. She would not lose to Yastremska on clay, no way.”

Rennae Stubbs says what Coco Gauff should have done against Dayana Yastremska

A long list of seeded players have really struggled at the grass court Grand Slam this year, particularly the top women.

Four of the top five WTA seeds are now out of the competition, which includes 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini.

She is joined by Gauff, Pegula and Qinwen Zheng, with world number one Aryna Sabalenka the last such player standing.

The Belarusian will certainly have plenty of motivation to go all the way this month, having lost the Australian Open and French Open finals this year.

She lost the first to Madison Keys and the second to Gauff, who will soon turn her focus to the hard courts of the US Open.

Coco gauff

Continuing her analysis of the 21-year-old on the current tour surface, however, Stubbs said of Gauff: “But on grass you do not have to take so much risk because if you hit the ball at 90mph on grass and it’s into the open court I don’t care how fast you are, Coco is the fastest player on tour, you are not getting to that ball.

RELATED : The world No 1: Coco Gauff admits ‘temptation’ to fire back at

“On clay, you are getting to that ball and it’s going to come back and you are going to take more risk and miss.

“On grass her forehand is short, they can go one, two point is over and there is nothing Coco can do. Is she going to start striking the forehand bigger? Maybe. But that’s not her game.

“So my thought is that she should have been chipping and playing ugly when Yastremska hits the serve to the forehand, rather than try and crush the forehand, chip it back, make it ugly!

“Chip it below the net and you know she is not comfortable coming in. You have to have game plan B and that wasn’t the case.”

Coco gauff

It will certainly be intriguing to see how Gauff deals with the shock loss, and more importantly if and how she will change her grass game to avoid future upsets.

She can, however, still hold her head very high regarding her season overall, which does, of course, include a superb Roland Garros title.

Former World Heavyweight Champion Fury Hints Usyk Ahead Trilogy Bout will Be At Wembley in April

Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has hinted he will fight Oleksandr Usyk in a trilogy bout at Wembley Stadium in April 2026.

Fury, 36, retired from boxing in January after losing a title fight rematch with Usyk by unanimous decision the previous month.

“April 18 2026 Wembley Stadium. The trilogy!”, Fury posted on social media on Thursday.

Fury’s co-promoters Queensberry told BBC Sport it is in discussions with Team Fury and Riyadh Season, the annual cultural and sporting event in the capital of Saudi Arabia.

On Wednesday, Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh also claimed Fury would come out of retirement next year.

“The ‘Gypsy King’ will be back,” Alalshikh said in a post on X.

“I talked with him, and I have his word to have him in Riyadh Season in 2026. We have a rabbit to hunt.”

Fury often referred to Usyk as a “rabbit” in the build-up to their title fights, both of which were held in Riyadh.

The Ukrainian won their first encounter in May 2024 by split decision to become the heavyweight division’s first undisputed four-belt champion.

The trilogy bout may depend on the outcome of Usyk’s meeting with Daniel Dubois next month. Usyk will become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion should he defeat the Briton at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 19 July.

After Comeback Victory Deontay Wilder Looking Forward To  Jarrell Miller Showdown

Deontay Wilder remembers the days when heavyweights were scared to say his name. But even when he was at the top of his game and sending skulls into arena crowds, Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller always wanted a piece of him.
Most of the noise came when Wilder was the WBC heavyweight champion. Since February 2020, however, Wilder has been beltless. Still, that hasn’t stopped Miller from calling him out.
That all continued following Wilder’s recent knockout win over Tyrrell Herndon. It was a win that the former champ needed, but nothing that impressed Miller
For the most part, Wilder (44-4-1, 43 KOs) believes he has bigger fish to fry. The win over Herndon stopped a two-fight losing streak. Now, he’s hoping to get his hands on guys like Oleksandr Usyk, Daniel Dubois, or, of course, Anthony Joshua.
From a pride standpoint, Wilder is open to fighting Miller. If, and when it does happen, he just hopes that the trash-talking New Yorker took care of some personal financial business ahead of time.
If that fight do land for him, I hope he already paid for his grave burial,” Wilder told TMZ Sports.
Deontay wilderWilder might be his preferred choice, but all signs point to Miller landing someone else. As first reported by The Ring, Miller could be thrown in with Jared Anderson, who, ironically enough, also shares the same nickname as Miller.
Talks for a Wilder fight will only take place if Miller picks up a win himself. The boisterous, brash contender hasn’t won a fight since early 2023, losing to Dubois at the end of that year before before settling for a majority decision draw against Andy Ruiz Jr in August 2024.
Whether Miller (26-1-2, 22 KOs) wins his possible match against Anderson or not, Wilder has heard enough of him. But the only way to shut him up is to get in the ring with him, something Wilder hopes will happen.
“I can’t wait.”
