Charlie Woods Prevails in Playoff to Qualify for U.S. Junior Amateur Championship

Charlie Woods qualified for his second straight U.S. Junior Amateur Championship with a clutch playoff win.

With his famous father, 15-time major winner Tiger Woods in attendance, the 16-year-old Woods held off two other golfers to claim the final qualifying spot Thursday at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla.

Charlie Woods shot a 1-under 71 but bogeyed the final hole to fall into a fifth-place tie with Oscar Crowe and Matthew Marigliano, forcing the playoff.

Woods will join the top four finishers — Arth Sinha (67), Lucas Gimenez (68), Sohan Patel (69) and Wylie Inman (69) — at the U.S. Junior Amateur from July 21-26 at Trinity Forest in Dallas. Crowe and Marigliano will be alternates.

Tiger Woods, 49, was a three-time U.S. Junior Amateur champion before going on to win 82 PGA Tour titles.

Charlie Woods, who missed the cut in last year’s Junior Amateur at Oakland Hills in Michigan, won his first junior tournament title last month at the Team TaylorMade Invitational in Bowling Green, Fla.

” Woods Left in the Dark as Brooks Koepka Reportedly Ignores Him for Open Practice Round: ‘I’ve Heard Nothing’”

Tiger Woods’ injuries mean he isn’t likely to hear from anyone in the build-up to The Open – but at least this time he won’t be asking to.

Once hailed as golf’s biggest draw, Tiger Woods used to have fellow pros lining up for the chance to join him in practice rounds ahead of the sport’s grandest stages. But things shifted dramatically when he attempted to play Royal Portrush for the first time in 2019.

Ahead of The 148th Open, the three-time Champion Golfer of the Year reached out to then-World No. 1 Brooks Koepka for advice. Though Koepka was also making his debut at Portrush, he had a distinct advantage—his caddie, Ricky Elliott, was born and raised in the Northern Ireland town and knew the course inside out. Elliott, who’s been on Koepka’s bag since 2013, is also a skilled golfer in his own right.

Woods was hoping to tap into that local knowledge—and perhaps size up Koepka, who arrived at the tournament with four major titles in his last nine appearances. But when Woods asked Koepka if he’d like to team up for a practice round, the reply was… silence.

Charlie Woods

“I texted Brooksie to congratulate him on another great finish,” Woods recalled with a laugh, referring to Koepka’s runner-up spot at the U.S. Open. “What he’s done in the last four majors has been unbelievable. I said, ‘Hey dude, do you mind if I tag along for a practice round?’ I’ve heard nothing.”

The crowd erupted in laughter as Woods grinned, clearly amused by the snub.

Just days later, Koepka offered an explanation that cleared the air. Speaking after a solid opening round of 68, he said the reason he didn’t reply was simple: he never got the message.

“I changed my phone number after the U.S. Open because it got leaked,” Koepka told Sky Sports. “I got about 40 texts, so I switched it Monday night. We don’t text that often, so I didn’t see anything from him. But I texted him on Wednesday from the new number and he replied—‘no worries.’”

As for Woods, his 2019 Open campaign got off to a rough start. A disastrous seven-over-par round left him tied for 143rd, and he missed the cut alongside Phil Mickelson—marking the first time both legends had failed to advance in the same major out of 83.

Tiger woods

Woods won’t be seeking redemption at Portrush this week, either. A ruptured Achilles sustained in March has sidelined the 15-time major winner from all four majors this year. Now 49, he hasn’t competed in a PGA Tour event in over a year, and whenever he does return, he’ll need more than just a few practice rounds to get back into form.

Jannik Sinner slams door on Carlos Alcaraz’s bid to match Roger Federer’s Grand Slam legacy

Jannik Sinner got his French Open revenge on Sunday, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in four sets in the Wimbledon 2025 final. The Italian won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, clinching his fourth Grand Slam title. The defeat also saw Alcaraz fail to match Roger Federer’s record streak of winning his first seven Grand Slam finals, with the Spaniard having five consecutive wins

Alcaraz earlier won two titles at Roland Garros, two in London and one in New York. In his sixth Grand Slam final, he lost to Sinner, and failed to maintain his 100 percent success rate.

Speaking on his rivalry with Sinner, Alcaraz said in his post-match press conference, “I just am really, really happy about having this rivalry with him. I think it’s great for us and it is great for tennis. Every time we play against each other, I think our level is really high. I think we don’t watch a level like this, if I’m honest with you. I don’t see any player playing against each other having the level that we are playing when we face each other.”

Roger Federer

“I think, as I said many, many times, this rivalry is getting better and better. We’re building a really great rivalry because we’re playing finals of Grand Slams, finals of Masters – the best tournaments in the world. It’s going to be better and better. I am just really grateful for that because it gives me the opportunity to just give my 100 per cent every practice, every day, just to be better, thanks to that. The level that I have to maintain and I have to raise if I want to beat Jannik is really high,” he added.

Alcaraz also has one more Grand Slam title than Sinner (four). The Italian won the 2024 and 2025 Australian Open, 2024 US Open and now Wimbledon 2025.

4 Belts To Grabs & How to Watch Usyk vs. Dubois 2 in the U.S.: Live Stream, Start Time, and PPV Cost Details

Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois are set to clash once again in a highly anticipated rematch, with London’s iconic Wembley Stadium the venue.

Four belts up for grabs

This weekend’s showdown carries massive stakes, with all four major heavyweight world titles on the line. The bout marks a sequel to the pair’s first meeting in 2023, which saw Usyk emerge victorious in Wroclaw, Poland.

Usyk enters the ring undefeated and riding high after back-to-back historic wins over Tyson Fury, which cemented his status as the undisputed heavyweight champion.

Dubois, meanwhile, comes into the bout with momentum of his own, having stunned Anthony Joshua in September 2024 – his third straight win since losing to Usyk.

Tyson Fury verbally agrees stunning boxing comeback with Anthony Joshua fight to finally take place

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have verbally agreed to a stunning boxing fight that will take place at Wembley, GB News can exclusively reveal.

Fury retired from the sport back in January, just weeks after suffering the second defeat of his professional career to Oleksandr Usyk.

His first loss was also at the hands of Usyk, who beat him in May last year in Saudi Arabia.

As for Joshua, the Watford-born star is yet to return to the ring since losing to Daniel Dubois back in September.

For years, talk of the two men doing battle has rumbled on and on.

With Fury retiring in January, many felt the ship had sailed and that Britain’s two biggest boxers would never engage in battle.

Now, however, GB News can exclusively reveal that Fury and Joshua have both agreed to fight – with the Gypsy King U-turning on his decision to quit the sport.

A well-placed source said: “Fury and Joshua is a case of when, not if.

“Tyson has agreed to come out of retirement to face AJ, which is why he’s been working hard in the gym in recent months.

“Things should be made official in the coming weeks.”

In recent years, many of the sport’s biggest fights have taken place in Saudi Arabia – with Turki Al-Sheikh having a big role to play.

Yet the bout between Fury and Joshua will take place at Wembley instead, with both figures keen for it to take place on UK soil instead of overseas.

The source also revealed that the fight could take place by the end of the year, if the pair and their entourages are able to agree on finances.

Fury made a staggering £67.3m from his December bout with Usyk but is likely to earn even more from a clash with Joshua.

Finances are, it’s understood, the only thing holding up a deal with the pair eager to secure as much money as possible.

The news that the clash will take place at Wembley, rather than on foreign soil, will likely please British fans on these shores.

Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, recently admitted that the fight could be ‘easily made’ in a huge sign that an agreement was close.

“I do [think it can be easily made],” he said.

“In the past, it’s always been: one’s a champion, one’s a challenger.

“Now, both guys are in a similar position: they’re coming off a defeat… Fury has two defeats, both to Oleksandr Usyk.

“They’re both still pretty much in their prime, and as we saw last Saturday, sometimes you don’t need the world championship belt.

“Sometimes when you’ve got two champions trying to become undisputed, it’s a little bit cagey.

“Benn vs Eubank Jr was just a great example of two guys that just went to war, and that’s exactly what you’d get with AJ against Fury.”

“He’ll Be Seeing The Canvas” Says Canelo vs Terence Crawford Will Ends In A Knockout

Terence Crawford is just months away from challenging Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez for his undisputed super middleweight world championship. Rolando Romero has little doubt how the action plays out.

Crawford will make the jump up two divisions from his last outing for the fight, looking to be the first man to defeat Canelo at the weight of 168 lbs. The Mexican has previously lost to Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol, but is yet to be bested at super-middleweight, where he has beaten the likes of Billy Joe Saunders, Caleb Plant and Jaime Munguia.

Rolly’ Romero, who is coming off a career best victory over Ryan Garcia, told FightHype that the weight is too much of a factor to give ‘Bud’ Crawford a chance.

“He’s 38 years old. Yeah, he saw something in Canelo. He’s about to see the canvas.

Terence Crawford

“Bivol was way bigger than Canelo. The same s*** that you saw Canelo fighting Bivol is the same s*** of Crawford moving up two weight classes to fight Canelo. Bivol is not a puncher. Canelo was trying to win the whole time, but Bivol was too big.

“Crawford is going to go in there and box Canelo’s head off the same way Amir Khan did, and out of nowhere, boom. Then we’re going to see a dead roach on the ground.”

The boxing world is split as to who comes out on top, with many opinions recently changing after Canelo’s underwhelming fight with William Scull. Crawford, however, has it all to do against a man who is completely bedded in at the weight he will be making for the first time

The American’s last outing came in August of 2024, a points win over previously undefeated Israel Madrimov to capture the WBA Super Welterweight World Title. The result ended an eleven-fight stoppage streak for ‘Bud’, perhaps showing that his power is unlikely to carry up. He faces Canelo on September 13 at the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas.

Terence Crawford has received yet another vote of confidence in his clash with Canelo Alvarez — this time from a seasoned Mexican trainer.

The Omaha fighter has had support from across the boxing world, including former champion Shannon Briggs, who believes he stops Alvarez late.

Terence Crawford has been full of belief for the bout despite a natural weight disadvantage as he comes up for his first super middleweight figh

One disadvantage heading into the fight for the American would be activity, as he competed last September, whereas Canelo has fought as recently as May.

Robert Garcia believes Terence Crawford has a ‘big’ chance due to Canelo being ‘comfortable’

However, Robert Garcia, the current trainer of Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, thinks the timing of this fight benefits the 37-year-old.

In an interview, he explained: “Most of the people don’t give Crawford a chance due to the size, but he’s got skills, he’s got good speed, footwork, that’s why I do give him a chance.

Terence Crawford

“Canelo’s last few fights, he gets his work done, but he never does that little extra to please, he knows he doesn’t need to anymore, he is comfortable enough with just securing the win.”

Garcia still thinks the Mexican comes in as favourite, but he believes he has morphed from a boxer to something else.

He said: “He became a businessman, that is something in favour of Crawford… at this stage, I am giving Crawford a big chance of pulling it off.”

Anthony Joshua trainer Robert Garcia was a super featherweight world champion before success as a coach

Before training big names like Anthony Joshua and Mikey Garcia, Garcia was a successful professional in his own right.

From 1992 to 2001, he was a super featherweight fighter who won the IBF title, which he defended twice successfully.

Terence Crawford

Known by the nickname ‘The Grandpa’, he amassed 34 wins with a 73% knockout ratio.

In his three losses, he was knocked out three times, including by legendary name Diego Corrales, the former two-weight world champion.

Maybe not one of his most famous moments, but Corrales landed a sickening straight right hand to floor Garcia and end the fight.

Now using his experience to train the next generation, he has so far guided Nonito Donaire and Rodriguez to success in world title fights.

With two Trainer of the Year awards under his belt already, maybe he can add another if his fighters continue their 2025 success.

Anthony Joshua Wishes for His Son to Forge a Future Beyond the Boxing Ring

Plenty of fighters love to fight because it is in their blood. But former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua isn’t among those who love the game so much that he wants to see his son pulled into the action. Joshua said recently in an interview that he would like to see his son pursue other activities.

The struggle of children who attempt to follow their famous parents into their chosen profession isn’t limited to online boxing news. Many youngsters see how their parents work and feel the pull to follow mom or dad into the family business. This can create a lot of difficult pressures for people on both sides of the equation.

Especially in the United States, people are keen to avoid the appearance of nepotism. Many kids want to prove that they are able to do things on their own. However, as long as they carry their parents’ last name it can be a difficult hurdle to clear.

Joshua Says Mental Side of Sport Concerns Him

There are many understandable reasons for Joshua wanting to keep his now 8-year-old son, JJ, away from boxing. It’s a physically demanding sport that requires taking punches to the head. Even the most sound defensive boxers still get rocked and absorb trauma from their opponents, much like Joshua did last night.

But heavyweight boxing news shows that Joshua is most worried about the mental side that would come with the sport. Any boxer who competes needs to be mentally tough. Joshua’s son would also find a different type of mental pressure.

JJ would face the pressure of living up to his father’s name. Joshua is one of the best heavyweight boxers of the past 10 years. That would be a lot for any child to live up to.

Eddie Hearn Sparks Buzz with Revelation of High-Stakes Talks for Anthony Joshua’s Next Showdown

Anthony Joshua, once regarded as one of the best and most dangerous heavyweights in boxing, appears interested in taking on a second crossover fight.

Joshua entertained a non-traditional boxing fight before, when he took on, and then finished, the former UFC heavyweight ruler Francis Ngannou in just two brutal rounds. Ngannou had previously shook up the world as he put Tyson Fury on the deck in a prior bout, but Joshua beat him with ease

He has since lost in dramatic fashion to Daniel Dubois, and has held “discussions” about his comeback through his representative, Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn. Speaking to Pro Boxing Fans, Hearn revealed the full plans for Joshua’s next fight, and talked about the possibility of a potential bizarre showdown with Jake Paul.

Anthony joshua

Although it had seemed that boxing was finally going to deliver an anticipated all-British heavyweight showdown between Joshua and Tyson Fury, that is no longer happening due to the Gypsy King’s retirement. Hearn said that, although a fight against Fury is out of the picture for 2025, that is a fight they are going to target, regardless, going into 2026.

But, between now and then, bouts against Joseph Parker, Agit Kabayel or Martin Bakole seem logical. One that may not have seemed logical, is against Paul. But boxing is stranger than fiction.

Hearn said the following to Pro Boxing Fans: “I was with His Excellency yesterday, obviously he’d met Jake Paul, I think he would like to do it, you know, but it’s mad enough to happen. It’s not something we expected.

“If it’s offered to us I would be shocked if AJ didn’t accept it, why wouldn’t you?”

Anthony joshua

Hearn added: “The plan for us is to fight Tyson Fury next year, if we can squeeze in Jake Paul along the way and you guys want AJ to end this whole process, he’ll gladly do it.”

With Turki Alalshikh seemingly keen on making Joshua vs Paul, it seems anything is possible and there is a real chance we see Joshua take on Paul, before he takes on ‘The Gypsy King’ in 2026.
