History on the Line: Scottie Scheffler Is One Round Away From Doing What Only Tiger Woods Has Done at the American Express

Scottie Scheffler is just one win away from joining an elite record with Tiger Woods. The American golfer is in contention to win the American Express this week.
The final of the event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 25, and he settled in a tie for second place at 21-under, just one stroke behind the tournament leader, Si Woo Kim, after three rounds.
If Scheffler wins the tournament on Sunday, he will become the third player in the modern era of golf to win 20+ PGA Tour events, which include four majors, before the age of 30. Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus have achieved the rare feat in their careers, and Scheffler is just one round away from joining the exclusive club.
Scottie Scheffler enjoyed a fabulous time playing on the PGA Tour in 2024 and 2025. He won seven tournaments in 2024 on the circuit, which included the Masters.
In 2025, he won six tournaments and is looking forward to his 20th win on the tour this week. He has won four majors so far in his career, which include the Masters 2022 and 2024, the PGA Championship 2025, and The Open Championship 2025

Tiger Woods

Scottie Scheffler started his campaign at the American Express 2026 with an opening round of 63 at the La Quinta Country Club. He then played the second round of 8-under 64 at the Nicklaus Tournament Course on Friday, followed by the third round of 4-under 68 at the Pete Dye Stadium Course. The world No. 1 talked about his performance in the post-round press conference on Sunday. He said (via ASAP Sports):
“I think I did pretty good. I got to have to a bit of a slow start. But I made a nice birdie there on 7. I hit two really good shots into 8. I struck the ball pretty nicely for the rest of the round. So I was pretty pleased with how I was playing. Outside of a couple bogeys, clean that up heading into tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, after three rounds at The American Express, Si Woo Kim took the lead in the game. He carded three rounds of 63, 65, and 66 to settle with a score of 22-under. This week, 18-year-old Blades Brown is having an incredible time on the greens. He settled with a score of 21-under after three rounds, in a tie for second place with Scottie Scheffler.
It will be interesting to see how things unfold for Scheffler on Sunday, in the final round of The American Express 2026, and whether he will be able to join the exclusive club featuring Woods and Nicklaus.
