No hesitation, no debate – Mayweather reveals who he rates higher between Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson

Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson have spent the last few years attempting to emulate some of the success that Floyd Mayweather achieved.

Mayweather was once a dominant world champion at 135lbs, with Davis and Stevenson both now arguably in that same category, with ‘Tank’ the reigning WBA champion while Shakur holds the WBC belt

The American duo are also multiple-weight world champions like Mayweather, as Davis has held gold at super-featherweight and super-lightweight, while Stevenson first became world champion at featherweight and claimed world honours at super-featherweight too.

Stevenson now looks to conquer another division when he challenges WBO super-lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez later this month, but it’s currently unknown what is next for Davis, as he looks to bounce back following a difficult 2025.

The turbulent year saw ‘Tank’ draw with Lamont Roach and then have a planned exhibition with Jake Paul cancelled due to domestic allegations.

A fight between Davis and Stevenson has been speculated for years but has never been able to come to fruition, and now Mayweather has revealed exactly what he thinks of the two fighters.

“As of right now the biggest puncher at 135 is Gervonta, but the most skilful fighter at 135 would be hands down Shakur Stevenson.

Gervonta Davis

“It’s really all about skills. Pernell Whittaker wasn’t a huge puncher but he was very exciting, very tough and he fought everybody. Shakur is trying to do the same thing.”

Mayweather guided the career of Davis for a number of years, before the pair parted ways several years ago, leading to a feud between the two.

“I Get Why It’s” Shakur Stevenson Gets Candid About Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis Showdown: “I Get It”

Shakur Stevenson has given his honest breakdown on Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis. Paul vs Davis goes down as a Netflix exhibition on November 14 with a winner to be declared for the fight.

Davis last fought in March and had a majority draw against Lamont Roach. For the longest time, the Roach rematch looked like the next fight for ‘Tank’. However, he snubbed that option, choosing Paul as his next opponent.

The decision turned heads, especially due to the size difference between the two fighters. Paul is 8″ taller and 60 pounds heavier than Davis. His last fight was against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was at cruiserweight, and ‘The Problem Child’ got ranked in the division by the WBA following a unanimous decision win.

Stevenson, like many fans, is skeptical of Davis’ decision to not have a rematch against Roach.

He said on the Ring Champs with AK & Barak channel, “It just depends, like as a fighter just because I had a draw with somebody, for me, I may run it back but in a business aspect if you run it back and you lose to Lamont and then the Jake Paul fight is presented you may not make as much money or the fight may not be as lucrative as it was before you lost.”

As a business, I understand. I ain’t going to hate on the decision, but as a man, your pride will get in the way.

Stevenson added that Davis doubts if he can beat Roach in a rematch and is also looking to retire. Hence, ‘Tank’ Davis is focusing on making as much money as possible before walking away from the sport.

Stevenson has long been touted as a potential next opponent for Davis. The fight, however, has never materialized. They both are title holders at 135 lbs with ‘Tank’ being the WBA champion and Stevenson the WBC. Stylistically, it’s an intriguing fight and could become one of the biggest in modern day boxing.

While Stevenson has always been keen for it, Davis seems to be on a different path, as him fighting Paul suggests.

Gervonta Davis vs Shakur Stevenson is a fight on every boxing fan’s bucket list. Davis is the WBA lightweight champion while Stevenson currently holds the WBC title in the 135 lbs division. They are the two best consensus lightweight fighters on the planet.

Davis and Stevenson are yet to come to a head despite the latter actively showing interest in the clash. Stylistically, it’s a fantastic spectacle as Davis (30-0-1, 28 KO wins) possesses vicious knockout power.

Oscar De La Hoya predicts Gervonta Davis vs Shakur Stevenson

A fight between them is a dream and Oscar De La Hoya has now given his take on how he believes the clash could play out. Speaking to AK & Barak, ‘The Golden Boy’ said:

Gervonta davis

They are different styles, obviously. Shakur fights on his backfoot more, fights tall, throws one, two punches. I think ‘Tank’ Davis takes more risk. He goes forward a little more. He has more power. I’m gonna pick ‘Tank’ by brutal knockout.

So what’s next for both fighters? Gervonta Davis was recently arrested on domestic violence charges, putting his planned August 16 rematch against Lamont Roach in doubt. There’s no recent updates regarding the status of that fight.

As for Stevenson, he is coming off a sensational win against Zepeda. He wants the Davis fight, but is open to other options as well. Floyd Schofield is keen to get his shot at Stevenson, while Lamont Roach could also be a possible option.

  • It’s not that Mayweather doesn’t value Gervonta Davis‘ skills – in fact, he has been one of his main promoters and mentors throughout his professional career – but Shakur Stevenson’s style seems to fit more with his own boxing philosophy: hit without being hit, control the pace of the fight and wear down the opponent with precision in the ring.
  • Floyd sees in Shakur a fighter with a chess player’s mentality, something he himself cultivated during his career. For Mayweather, boxing is not only won with strength, but with intelligence.

What does Gervonta Davis think?

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s opinion did not go unnoticed by Gervonta Davis, who responded through social media with a defiant message:

People talk a lot… but nobody wants to get in the ring with me. You decide who is the best when the fight happens.

Shakur Stevenson names his opponent for ‘the biggest and best fight in boxing

WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson has claimed that a bout between himself and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is “the biggest and best fight in boxing”.

Stevenson defends his title on Saturday, live on DAZN PPV, when he takes on the dangerous Mexican William Zepeda in the co-main event of Ring III

A three-weight world champion, Stevenson has achieved a lot in his eight years as a professional boxer and he is always on the hunt for the biggest fights possible.

One name which Stevenson is frequently linked with is knockout artist ‘Tank’ Davis, and it is an all-American showdown that the former believes needs to happen sooner rather than later.

“Me and Tank is the biggest and best fight in boxing. That’s the fight to make,” Stevenson told DAZN.

“That’s a fight I’ve been wanting forever, and I know that the time is here. We can’t wait no longer.

“Me versus Tank Davis is the fight to make, I’m excited for the challenge, but I’ve got to handle this challenge first.”

As Stevenson stated, a win over Zepeda is needed if he is to make a fight with Davis a reality, but ‘Tank’ also has to hold up his end of the bargain.

After drawing with Lamont Roach in March, Davis is set to be involved in a rematch with sources reporting that the contest will take place on August 16.
