“There’s No Way Around It” – Lennox Lewis Drops Shocking Verdict on Usyk vs Wilder

Oleksandr Usyk: The heavyweight division is stirring again. After a relatively quiet 2025, the pace looks set to quicken in 2026.

January alone brings the returns of top contenders Agit Kabayel and Moses Itauma, while former lineal champion Tyson Fury has already announced his decision to end his latest retirement and return to the ring this year.

WBO champion Fabio Wardley could make the first defence of his title before spring. But the biggest question remains the future of unified champion Oleksandr Usyk. The Ukrainian boxed just once in 2025, claiming undisputed status for a second time with his rematch victory over Daniel Dubois. Having since vacated the WBO belt, Usyk could yet chase a hat-trick of undisputed reigns — but before any potential showdown with Wardley, he is widely expected to defend his remaining three titles against former WBC champion Deontay Wilder.

Usyk’s interest in facing “The Bronze Bomber” has surprised many, given Wilder’s recent performances, which have fuelled the belief that the American is past his best and no longer carries the same aura of fear created by his concussive knockout power.

Yet Usyk’s career has been defined by a willingness to face the best of his era. Victories over Anthony Joshua, Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury underline that ambition, and it was against Fury that Usyk made history, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis achieved the feat by defeating Evander Holyfield in their 1999 rematch.

Oleksandr Usyk

Lewis, boxing’s last undisputed heavyweight king before Usyk, recently offered his verdict when speaking to Pro Boxing Fans.

“I think Usyk is way too great to lose that fight. I think it’s going to be an easy fight for Usyk. Everybody wants to see that fight. I think Usyk has it hands down.”

If the bout does materialise, it would pit the division’s most complete modern heavyweight against a fading but still dangerous puncher — a clash between control and chaos. And while Wilder’s right hand always offers a threat, history suggests Usyk has already solved far tougher problems than that.

‘Two or Three More Fights and Then I’ll Walk Away’ Oleksandr Usyk Opens Up on Retirement Plans

Oleksandr Usyk looks like he still has plenty left in his gas tank.
At 38, the Ring, WBA, WBC, and IBF heavyweight champion barely broke a sweat when knocking out Daniel Dubois in the fifth round of their Wembley Stadium encounter last summer
Oleksandr Usyk holds the top pound-for-pound spot on The Ring’s rankings. Regardless of how great he continues to look, the future Hall of Famer doesn’t plan on fighting for too much longer.
“I think two or three fights more,” Usyk told The Ring’s Mike Coppinger
Before he hangs up the gloves, Usyk could make another run at becoming an undisputed champion by reclaiming the WBO belt he gave up late last year. He’s been undisputed three times, including once at cruiserweight in 2018 before moving up in weight.
His decision to relinquish the WBO strap allowed Fabio Wardley, who beat Joseph Parker for the interim title, to become a full-fledged champion. Serhii Lapin, Usyk’s manager, said his client wanted younger fighters to have an opportunity.
Before Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) attempts to regain it, he has his sights set on a former WBC heavyweight beltholder.
“I want a fight with Deontay Wilder,” he said.
Wilder (44-4-1, 43 KOs) hasn’t looked dangerous in a long time, losing four of his last six fights.
Usyk’s team is already deep in negotiations with the 40-year-old to make that fight happen in the coming months, with Los Angeles and Las Vegas options.

Usyk Shares How Many Battles Are Left in His Career and Who He’s Eyeing Next

Oleksandr Usyk has rejected the possibility of hanging up his gloves in the near future, declaring that he is likely to remain in the sport for at least another year.

The bona fide heavyweight king has not fought since his fifth-round stoppage victory over Daniel Dubois in July 2025 to become a three-time undisputed champion.

Usyk showed no interest in defending his crown against Wardley, who was upgraded from interim to full WBO champion – following his 11th-round finish over Joseph Parker – towards the end of last year.

Instead, the Ukrainian has expressed far more of a desire to face former world champion Deontay Wilder, with their respective teams having initiated negotiations for a showdown this year.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ ended a year-long layoff last June, stopping little-known heavyweight Tyrrell Herndon in round seven but still not looking like the formidable force he once was.

Previous defeats to Parker and Zhilei Zhang already suggested that Wilder has been on a steady decline since losing his trilogy clash with Tyson Fury in 2021.

Usyk is nonetheless targeting the 40-year-old American for his eagerly-anticipated return later this year, while also insisting that he plans to have two or three more fights in total.

Oleksandr Usyk

The 38-year-old said that much in a recent interview with Ring Magazine.

“I want fight with [The Bronze Bomber], Deontay Wilder. I want this fight, I think Deontay, too, [wants it to happen]. Okay, let’s go.

“I think [I’ll have] two [or] three fights more.”

‘Unbelievable Loss’: Oleksandr Usyk Mourns Death Of Anthony Joshua’s Associates In Accident

Undisputed heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk has expressed his shock and condolences following the tragic death of two associates of Anthony Joshua in an accident in Nigeria, which also left the former heavyweight champion injured

Oleksandr Usyk, who defeated Joshua twice to claim the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles, described the loss of the two men in the road crash as “unbelievable.”

In his statement, Usyk highlighted that the deceased were not only part of Joshua’s team but were also close friends. He extended his condolences to their families and loved ones, while also wishing Joshua a swift and full recovery.

“This is an unbelievable loss. @sina_evolve and @healthy_mindset were two incredible people who were not only part of AJ’s team, but also friends! My sincere condolences to their families, loved ones, and everyone who knew them. @anthonyjoshua – wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay strong, champion,” Usyk wrote in an Instagram story post.

Joshua was involved in a road accident in the Makun area of Ogun State in Nigeria on Monday. He was injured and lost two of his associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.

The incident happened barely eight days after the former heavyweight world champion knocked out YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in their Netflix-backed bout in Miami.

In a statement, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the accident to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking.

It said preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road.

“The primary causes of the crash, being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” FRSC said.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victim, Joshua, a speedy recovery.

“Mega-Fight Brewing: Usyk’s Team Working Behind the Scenes on Wilder Clash”

Oleksandr Usyk vs Deontay Wilder is “very likely” manager confirms

Oleksandr Usyk’s team have revealed that their two-time undisputed heavyweight champion is “very likely” to face American Deontay Wilder next and have even named a potential date and location.

Manager Egis Klimas told The National in Dubai that, “a different group from the United States will promote Usyk’s next fight.”

Klimas continued, “It’s not official yet, so I cannot tell you. He might be fighting in the Riyadh season, but as far as right now, we don’t have any offers.”

He then revealed, “It’s very likely [we will see Usyk face Wilder].

“Because right now we’re working on it, and we’re working on some multi-fight agreement for Oleksandr.

“As soon as we’re going to confirm that, we’re going to jump in. And some talks already are going on with the team of Wilder.

“We’re looking at Las Vegas or Los Angeles, and dates are the end of April, beginning of May.

“Wilder is one of the best names [that] Oleksandr didn’t face yet. He’s still in good shape, and he’s still a fighter, so he’s interesting. And as well, it’s the United States.”

Oleksandr Usyk

40-year-old Wilder is in the midst of a comeback campaign after losing four from his last five fights between 2020-2024. In June 2025, he came back to score his first victory since October 2022. The former long-reigning WBC world heavyweight champion knocked out unheralded Tyrell Herndon in seven rounds.

Usyk’s been reassuring everyone that he’s got “at least two more years.” Klimas backs that up, “He feels strong. It’s not time for him to hang up his gloves.”

Now 38, Usyk’s training camps are becoming harder for him, but his fifth-round demolition over powerful Brit Daniel Dubois shows he is still a sharp, potent force in the heavyweight division, with plenty left to give.

“First Option” Oleksandr Usyk Names His Top Targets for Next Heavyweight Clash – Deontay Wilder

The Ukrainian stopped Londoner Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in July to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.

Usyk, 38, then vacated his WBO belt, with Britain’s Fabio Wardley upgraded from ‘interim’ to full champion.

“I continue fighting next year. I want to fight Deontay Wilder. I think it’s interesting,” he told Boxing King Media.

Wilder, a former WBC world champion and once the division’s most feared puncher, has struggled since his trilogy with Tyson Fury.

The American’s stock plummeted after back-to-back stoppage defeats by Joseph Parker in 2023 and Zhilei Zhang in 2024.

After more than a year out, Wilder, 40, returned in June with a low-key seventh-round stoppage of little-known Tyrrell Anthony Herndon.

Despite that decline, Usyk still views ‘The Bronze Bomber’ as a marquee name.

“He is a world champion guy. A very famous and strong guy,” Usyk said.

Oleksandr Usyk

“One of the great heavyweights of the last 10 years. I spoke with my team and said he is the first option.”

Oleksandr Usyk chose to vacate his WBO title rather than face mandatory challenger Wardley. He may still be able to fit in a voluntary defence with Wilder if an opponent is agreed quickly, with several mandatory challengers with other organisations already tied up.

WBC ‘interim’ champion Agit Kabayel meets Damian Knyba on 10 January, while the IBF has ordered Richard Torrez Jr to face Frank Sanchez in a final eliminator. WBA ‘regular’ champion Kubrat Pulev is scheduled to fight Murat Gassiev on 12 December.

Usyk – who has twice beaten Fury, Dubois and Anthony Joshua – has previously said he plans to fight for only two more years, aiming to return to the ring in 2026.

The Olympic gold medalist became undisputed champion at cruiserweight before moving up to heavyweight, where he outpointed Fury to become boxing’s first undisputed champion in 25 years.

“Usyk Gets the Green Light” – WBC Clears Heavyweight Champion for Voluntary Defense as Deontay Wilder Fight Looms

Oleksandr Usyk has been granted the opportunity to make a voluntary defence of his WBC heavyweight title after saying he wanted to fight Deontay Wilder next.

Unified heavyweight champion Usyk said this week that Wilder was his “first option” for his next fight.

Wilder is not ranked in the WBA, WBC or IBF’s top 10, meaning Usyk may have to vacate some of his titles to fight him.

But the WBC announced at their annual convention that they would not immediately call a mandatory defence for the Ukrainian for their belt, opening the door for a world title fight between the pair.

“Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk can make a voluntary defence. He’s already said he would like to fight Deontay Wilder,” a WBC statement said.

Usyk last fought in July when he stopped Londoner Daniel Dubois in round five to become two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.

But in November, the 38-year-old decided to relinquish his WBO title, elevating Britain’s Fabio Wardley to heavyweight champion.

At the time, Usyk informed the WBO he would not be proceeding with a mandatory title defence against Wardley.

The WBC also confirmed that a potential fight between British boxers Lawrence Okolie and Moses Itauma would determine the next mandatory challenger for the WBC belt.

Both fighters already have bouts scheduled, with Itauma fighting Jermaine Franklin on 24 January in Manchester and Okolie boxing in Nigeria later this month against a yet-to-be announced opponent.

Several other Britons could also put themselves into world title contention next year, with a potential bout between Joshua Buatsi and Ben Whittaker expected to determine the next mandatory challenger at light heavyweight.

Britain’s Conor Benn was also named the number one challenger for Mario Barrios’ WBC welterweight world title.

The WBC has stripped Terrence Crawford of his super-middleweight belt, saying the American hasn’t paid his past two sanctioning fees and calling it a “slap in the face”.

Crawford remains the WBA ‘Super’, WBO and IBF super-middleweight champion.

Terence Crawford believes there is just one heavyweight in boxing history that ranks even higher than Oleksandr Usyk.

The Ukrainian superstar cemented his place in boxing folklore in July at Wembley Stadium in London when he defeated Britain’s Daniel Dubois for the second time to capture the undisputed heavyweight championship once again.

Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the ‘four belt era’ back in May of 2024 when he defeated Tyson Fury in their historic first encounter in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The 38-year-old defeated Fury once again in their rematch just months later, although their second encounter was only contested for the unified WBC, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles.

Whilst many consider Usyk to be the best heavyweight of his generation, and one of the greatest to have ever laced up a pair of gloves, pound-for-pound great ‘Bud’ Crawford has revealed the one heavyweight that he ranks even higher than the Ukrainian hero.

In a feature with The Daily Mail, Crawford made no mistake in ranking none other than the iconic Muhammad Ali ahead of Usyk.

Known to fans and analysts around the world as ‘The Greatest’, Ali enjoyed considerable success throughout the course of his 21-year professional career, which culminated in him capturing the world heavyweight championship on several occasions.

Ali shared the ring with a number of legendary heavyweight fighters during his tenure, but some of his more memorable bouts came against the likes of Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and George Foreman to name just a few.

Congratulation, Boxing Icon Ranks Oleksandr Usyk Among The Most Greatest Elite Heavyweights of All Time

Oleksandr Usyk is easily considered to be a modern legend of boxing, as he is still yet to be defeated in his career.

Decorated as both an amateur and a professional, Usyk’s win over Daniel Dubois saw him become a three-time undisputed champion.

It is currently unclear as to who Usyk will face next, despite Joseph Parker campaigning for a championship fight.

One boxing coach feels that Usyk has already etched his name into the history books, comparing him amongst the top fighters of all time.

Abel Sanchez says that Oleksandr Usyk is a top 10 heavyweight of all time

Legendary boxing trainer Abel Sanchez has been around the sport for decades now, meaning he has a deep knowledge of the fighting game.

In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Sanchez was asked to give his thoughts on Usyk and where he ranks against greats of the past.

Sanchez started by saying that he hopes people don’t say that Usyk fought in a ‘weak division’ when comparing him to the likes of Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali.

“I would never compare him in a fight to Tyson, because Tyson is a different era.”

The coach then added, “In his era, he is the cream of the crop. He’s dominated everybody, he’s beaten everybody.”

When asked to give Usyk a ranking against all-time greats at heavyweight, Sanchez said, “In the bottom five of a top 10… Somewhere around five or six, somewhere there.”

The coach was then asked how Usyk would fare in fights against some of the greatest heavyweights of all time, to which Sanchez responded, “You can’t compare, it’s just different eras.”

Abel Sanchez says that Oleksandr Usyk is the only man who beat himself

In terms of the current options for Usyk at heavyweight, Sanchez feels that no fighter is going to be able to beat the Ukrainian, except for himself.

“He’s the only one who can beat himself right now. If he’s not motivated, if he’s not up for a fight, if he doesn’t think that there’s enough of a challenge in front of him, he’s the only one who can beat himself.”

Despite feeling Usyk is for the most part unbeatable, Sanchez said that he is aiming to get a fight made between the champion and his athlete, Filip Hrgovic.

“Carl Froch Shares Where Daniel Dubois Would Stand Among British Heavyweight Greats If He Defeats Oleksandr Usyk”

Former super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch has revealed where he’ll rank Daniel Dubois compared to other British heavyweights, including Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, if he beats Oleksandr Usyk at Wembley on Saturday.

Dubois, 27, comes into the contest holding the IBF heavyweight title while the current unified heavyweight titleholder Usyk, 38, boasts the WBA (Super), WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine belts.

Wembley Stadium will be packed to the rafters by fans eagerly anticipating the intriguing bout this weekend. Of course, the pair previously went toe-to-toe in Wroclaw, Poland, in August 2023, with Usyk winning via knockout in round nine.

Almost two years on from the pair’s first clash, Dubois is a different beast. Since his defeat in Poland, the 27-year-old Londoner has defeated Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and most impressively stopped Joshua, 35, in round five of the all-British clash at Wembley last summer.

As for Usyk, he has beaten Fury twice since his last fight with Dubois and was his usual slick self in the ring during those bouts. But at 38, is he slowing down? We will find out on Saturday night.

Dubois will have to do something that no other man has done in Usyk’s 23 professional bouts and finish the contest as the victor.

And if he does win, in turn, he will have achieved something Fury and Joshua couldn’t despite sharing a ring with the 38-year-old on four combined occasions.

Ahead of the fight, Froch spoke to SPORTbible on behalf of casino.co.uk and explained where Dubois will rank on the list of all-time British heavyweight champions if he beats Usyk.

Froch said: “You’d have to put him right up there.

“You’ve got Lennox Lewis at number 1, then the likes of Tyson Fury, maybe AJ in there. Frank Bruno, Joe Bugner, Herbie Hide, Henry Cooper.

“You’ve got to go back years, so if you’re looking at what you consider to be the top British heavyweights in the last couple of generations, you’d put Lewis at 1, Fury at 2, and then you’d have AJ around the number 3 mark.

“If Dubois beats Usyk, after what Usyk did to both Fury and AJ, unless Usyk looked terrible and past his prime, if he gets beaten, he gets beaten. He’s still in form, lives the life and is looking good.

Daniel dubois

“With that in mind, you can make an argument for Dubois going in at number 2 ahead of Fury. On paper, you can make the case because Fury lost to Usyk twice.

“In reality, Fury has that trilogy with a prime Deontay Wilder in the book, plus the win over Klitschko in Germany.

“It’s a close second, but he definitely takes the number 3 spot from Anthony Joshua. Dubois is only 27, too, so he’s got plenty of time on his side.”
