No hesitation, no debate – Mayweather reveals who he rates higher between Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson

Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson have spent the last few years attempting to emulate some of the success that Floyd Mayweather achieved.

Mayweather was once a dominant world champion at 135lbs, with Davis and Stevenson both now arguably in that same category, with ‘Tank’ the reigning WBA champion while Shakur holds the WBC belt

The American duo are also multiple-weight world champions like Mayweather, as Davis has held gold at super-featherweight and super-lightweight, while Stevenson first became world champion at featherweight and claimed world honours at super-featherweight too.

Stevenson now looks to conquer another division when he challenges WBO super-lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez later this month, but it’s currently unknown what is next for Davis, as he looks to bounce back following a difficult 2025.

The turbulent year saw ‘Tank’ draw with Lamont Roach and then have a planned exhibition with Jake Paul cancelled due to domestic allegations.

A fight between Davis and Stevenson has been speculated for years but has never been able to come to fruition, and now Mayweather has revealed exactly what he thinks of the two fighters.

“As of right now the biggest puncher at 135 is Gervonta, but the most skilful fighter at 135 would be hands down Shakur Stevenson.

Gervonta Davis

“It’s really all about skills. Pernell Whittaker wasn’t a huge puncher but he was very exciting, very tough and he fought everybody. Shakur is trying to do the same thing.”

Mayweather guided the career of Davis for a number of years, before the pair parted ways several years ago, leading to a feud between the two.

Davis Reverses Retirement Decision Following Controversial Lamont Roach Bout

Gervonta Davis: In a dramatic turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the boxing world, Gervonta “Tank” Davis has officially reversed his previously announced retirement plans, following a controversial bout with Lamont Roach Jr. that ended in a majority draw. The decision marks a significant pivot in the career of one of boxing’s most explosive talents and raises questions about what’s next for the undefeated star.

The fight against Lamont Roach Jr., held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, was highly anticipated, with fans expecting a definitive outcome from Davis, known for his devastating power and aggressive style. However, the 12-round matchup defied expectations.

  • While Davis landed several of his trademark power shots early, Roach’s disciplined style and tactical approach neutralized many of Davis’ signature opportunities.
  • Despite moments where a knockout seemed imminent, the fight concluded in a majority draw, leaving both fighters and fans in disbelief.

The inconclusive result reportedly played a key role in Davis’ decision to rethink retirement. Sources close to the fighter revealed that Davis felt there was unfinished business to address before stepping away from the sport, particularly against competitors who can test his full range of skills.

Following the Roach fight, Davis initially announced plans to retire, citing physical toll and a desire to explore other opportunities outside the ring. But in a surprising reversal, Davis took to social media and held a press conference to confirm he would remain active.

Gervonta Davis

“After reflecting on my last fight and everything that’s happened, I realized I’m not done yet,” Davis said. “I still have goals I want to achieve, and I owe it to myself and the fans to keep fighting at the highest level.”

This announcement reignites discussions about potential rematches and high-profile bouts, including the possibility of revisiting the matchup with Roach or pursuing other top-tier lightweight opponents.

Gervonta Davis’ decision to continue fighting ensures that he remains a central figure in boxing’s lightweight division. While the draw with Roach was controversial, it also highlighted Davis’ ability to adapt and persevere against a technically skilled opponent, reminding fans and critics alike that he is more than just a knockout artist.

Promoters, analysts, and fans are now speculating on the next steps for Davis. A rematch with Roach seems likely to settle the unresolved rivalry, while other options could include matchups with other top contenders or even high-profile exhibition bouts that capitalize on Davis’ star power.

With retirement off the table, Davis’ career enters a new and uncertain phase. Observers expect intense negotiations and strategic matchmaking, balancing Davis’ commercial appeal with the need for meaningful competition.

What remains clear is that Gervonta “Tank” Davis is far from finished, and the boxing world will be watching closely to see where one of the sport’s most electrifying talents goes next.

Whether it’s a rematch, a new contender, or a high-profile exhibition, Davis’ return promises action, drama, and the continued evolution of his legacy in the ring.

“I Felt Real Power Only Once” – Davis Makes Shocking Admission About One Fighter

Gervonta Davis is known for his own huge power but he has revealed the biggest puncher he’s faced. The future of Davis is currently up in the air, having not competed since he was held to a controversial majority decision draw against Lamont Roach back in March

He then looked set for an exhibition bout with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in November, but that event was cancelled after ‘Tank’ was named in a civil lawsuit regarding domestic allegations.

Prior to his difficult 2025, Davis was widely regarded as one of the heaviest hitters in the sport, pound-for-pound, with 28 of his 30 victories coming by knockout.

When it comes to naming who hit him hardest though, one name stood out for Davis, as he revealed during a past media scrum that he gives that recognition to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero.

“I ain’t going to lie, Rolly hit hard. People are sleeping on Rolly. He hasn’t got a chin, so Rolly gets caught, but he can hit … He’s the only person I have felt. When he swung, it felt like there were bricks in his hands.”

‘Tank’ met Romero back in May 2022, claiming a sixth round TKO victory. Since then, Romero has won the WBA super-lightweight title, and then picked up the biggest win of his career when he defeated Ryan Garcia back in May.

Gervonta Davis

The victory over Garcia saw Romero win the WBA Regular welterweight title, and he has since been upgraded to full champion.

A fight between Romero and boxing legend Manny Pacquiao had been touted for 2026, but it appears that ‘Rolly’ will have to defend his belt against his mandatory challenger Shakhram Giyasov next instead, or risk being stripped.

Setback Before the Rematch: Gervonta Davis Explains Injury Delaying His Return

Gervonta “Tank” Davis remains one of boxing’s biggest attractions, a fighter who draws huge crowds thanks to his explosive talent and his often controversial life outside the ropes.

In 2025, Davis, 30-0-1 (28 KOs), has fought only once — a highly contentious draw with Lamont Roach — while simultaneously dealing with a series of personal issues. His planned crossover bout against cruiserweight Jake Paul was also scrapped following recent allegations of abuse made by Davis’s ex-girlfriend.

Roach and another of Davis’s former opponents, Isaac Cruz, met last Saturday night in San Antonio, Texas, with both men chasing a world title shot at super-lightweight. Cruz’s WBC interim belt was at stake, but the main event ended in yet another draw for Roach — the third of his career

While Roach has no interest in a Davis rematch at present, his opponent from the weekend may be heading in that direction. The Baltimore native signalled his intentions in a now-deleted post on X, writing:

“I’m taking him [Isaac Cruz] next, soon as my knee gets better.”

What exactly is wrong with his knee remains unclear, but a Davis–Cruz rematch would revisit their December 2021 meeting, which Davis won by unanimous decision after a fiercely competitive 12 rounds. It may also prove a more lucrative option for Cruz than a second fight with Roach, which has been floated for next year.

Power vs Precision: Gervonta Davis Faces Crucial Test Against Lamont Roach in High-Stakes Showdown

Gervonta “Tank” Davis has built his reputation on inevitability. When he connects clean, fights tend to end abruptly. Lamont Roach Jr., by contrast, has carved out his career with discipline, ring IQ, and the kind of composure that frustrates punchers. As talk intensifies around a potential Davis–Roach showdown, the matchup presents one of the most intriguing style clashes in the lightweight division.

Davis remains one of boxing’s most bankable stars, a southpaw wrecking ball whose timing and shot selection have produced a highlight-reel knockout ratio. His patience is often overlooked—Tank is content to download data, make reads, and flip a fight with a single counter. That blend of calm and concussive power has made him a nightmare for opponents who can’t afford even a momentary lapse.

Roach enters the conversation from a different angle. A former world champion at super featherweight, he’s long been respected for his fundamentals: tight defense, smart footwork, and an ability to control tempo. He doesn’t chase knockouts; he accumulates advantages. Against elite competition, Roach’s poise and adaptability have been his calling cards, and those tools could matter greatly against a finisher like Davis.

Stylistically, the fight asks a simple question with a complex answer: can Roach manage distance and deny Davis the exchanges he thrives on? If Roach can keep the bout in the long range—using his jab, lateral movement, and angles—he gives himself a chance to bank rounds and extend the contest. But every minute in the ring with Davis carries risk. Tank’s counters are sharp, his body work is brutal, and his ability to explode late makes even comfortable leads feel fragile.

Gervonta Davis

For Davis, the matchup offers a chance to showcase layers of his game beyond power. Beating a composed, technically sound opponent would reinforce his claim as a complete fighter, not just a puncher. For Roach, it’s an opportunity to upend expectations, proving that craft and composure can blunt even the most dangerous offense.

Beyond styles, the stakes are clear. A Davis win keeps him firmly at the center of the lightweight conversation and fuels demand for the division’s biggest nights. A Roach upset would ripple across boxing, instantly reshaping title pictures and elevating him into the sport’s top tier.

Whether it becomes a tactical chess match or ends in sudden drama, Davis vs. Roach promises tension from the opening bell. It’s power versus precision—one moment capable of changing everything.

“He’s Next” – Gervonta Davis Targets Former Champion for Explosive Comeback Fight

Gervonta Davis appears to have made up his mind on his boxing return. It was a difficult period for ‘Tank’ in 2025, with the year beginning with a controversial majority decision draw to Lamont Roach in his WBA lightweight title defence in March

The main talking point from the fight came when Davis voluntarily took a knee and retreated to his corner claiming he had grease in his eyes, with many onlookers claiming that should have led to a knockdown being scored, and Terence Crawford even thinking he should have been disqualified.

An immediate rematch was then expected to take place, but instead ‘Tank’ opted for an exhibition bout with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, which was scheduled for November.

It never went ahead after Davis was named in a civil lawsuit regarding domestic allegations, and after the Baltimore man had previously stated that he had plans to retire at the end of the year, it appeared that his time in a boxing ring may have been up.

Davis seems to have now made a U-turn on those comments though, after revealing he is targeting one man in particular for his return.

Gervonta Davis

Taking to social media after Isaac Cruz and Roach recently fought to a majority decision draw, ‘Tank’ said he wants to take on Cruz.

“I’m taking him next, soon as my knee gets better.”

Davis previously fought Cruz back in December 2021, claiming a unanimous decision victory. Cruz is a former WBA super-lightweight champion, and currently holds the WBC interim crown at 140lbs, which he retained with that draw against Roach in December.

“He’s Just a Gatekeeper!” — Gervonta Davis Takes a Savage Shot at Lamont Roach

Lamont Roach may have given Gervonta Davis all he could handle, but ‘Tank’ doesn’t see anything special in the former junior lightweight champion.
Roach faced Isaac Cruz on Saturday in his first appearance since fighting Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) to a controversial draw on March 1 in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Initially, Davis agreed to an immediate rematch with Roach, before ultimately choosing to partake in an exhibition with Jake Paul. After more domestic violence allegations against Davis came to light, the Paul fight was scrapped.

At Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, Roach (25-1-3, 10 KOs) was knocked down and fought a close contest with Cruz, settling for his second majority draw of the year. In the aftermath of the fight, Davis gave some very brief thoughts on Roach.
“He’s a gatekeeper,” Davis said on his X account. “That’s it.
Roach, 30, was forced to play catch-up against Cruz after touching the canvas in the third round. To his credit, he fought well in the pocket. Cruz, who lost a close decision to Davis in 2021, was deducted a point in the seventh after a kidney punch.
Terence CrawfordThis may not be the last time Cruz (28-3-2, 18 KOs) and Roach see each other in the ring. At the post-fight presser, they sat side-by-side. Each man stated their case for why the scorecards should have been in their favor. Nevertheless, in the midst of those discussions, they both agreed to a prompt rematch.
That sequel, however, will take time after it was revealed Roach suffered a broken right hand in the fifth round.

Davis: Lamont Roach Jr Sends Tremors Through Boxing World by Dramatically Withdrawing from Highly Anticipated Gervonta Davis Rematch ?

What seems like a foregone conclusion now appears to be closer to being a reality than just a rumor. WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr. is heading towards moving on from the Gervonta Davis rematch as the latter deals with his upcoming day in court.

The 29-year-old Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) from Washington, D.C, was last seen in March when he gave Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) his toughest fight to date, which resulted in a highly debated majority draw. That night, Davis took a knee voluntarily after being hit with a punch, which should have been called a knockdown, but instead, referee Steve Willis allowed Davis to go to his corner and have his face wiped. The NYSAC (New York State Athletic Commission) would review the footage weeks later and did not change the outcome of the fight.

What happened in the fight and the NYSAC’s actions after fueled the anticipation for the rematch. There were rumors that the fight would happen as early as June, but after talks stalled a bit, the date of August 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV, was put out there by multiple outlets.

Although the August date appeared to be solid, there hadn’t been an official press conference, nor had tickets gone on sale, leading fans to believe that there was an issue. Roach would later go to social media to say that Davis hadn’t signed his part of the contract, so the fight wasn’t a done deal. In July, Davis was arrested as he had an active warrant for a domestic violence incident that occurred on Father’s Day in June. On the day Davis was arrested, the Ring’s Keith Idec posted on X that he was told “Tank hadn’t been training for 3 weeks before he was arrested” in July.

Now that we are in August, those dates seem not to be realistic as well. FightsATW was told that as of right now, “it doesn’t look like the rematch is happening” and that Roach “can’t keep waiting” for Davis.

The target is for Roach to fight again before the end of the year, but whether that is at 130 pounds, where he is the champion, or 135, where the bigger names are, is the question that he and his team have to answer within the next couple of weeks as we head into the fall. Of course, this all depends on whether Roach and his team can find a suitable opponent who would be ready for a fight within the next couple of months.

Recently, Gary Russell Jr. popped up on Cigar Talk to throw his name in the hat as a potential opponent, but Roach quickly responded by saying the only Russell he would consider is WBA junior welterweight champion Gary Antuanne Russell. Regardless of which Russell it is, a fight between Roach and a Russell would be a huge event in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area.

If Davis’ career is truly nearing its end, as he has stated in multiple interviews, he will leave a legacy that leaves much to be desired. He is without a doubt one of the most exciting fighters to watch in boxing, but his actions outside of the ring have caused him to fight less, which also meant taking fights with either opponents that weren’t on his level, were coming up from a different weight class, or had to squeeze down to a contracted weight.

The Vasily Lomachenko fight never materialized, facing Keyshawn Davis or Shakur Stevenson isn’t likely to happen, and now the rematch with Roach, arguably the hardest fight he has been in, isn’t happening anytime soon. Sure, the Jake Paul exhibition is still out there and would make a ton of money, but that event doesn’t add to his legacy. Maybe Davis isn’t worried about legacy, which is totally fine, but you can’t be upset when you’re not considered for a P4P list. You can’t have it both ways.

Gervonta davis

Let’s see if Davis can get past his latest legal issues, and the rematch with Roach can happen in the early part of 2026. If it can’t, it’ll be a shame because we will never know if Davis just had an off night or if Roach really does have Davis’ number.

Gervonta Davis is once again at the center of controversy: retirement rumors, tensions with his trainer and an uncertain future in boxing. Is the end near for ‘Tank’?

The rumors about Gervonta’s possible retirement, as well as the recent statements of his trainer, have cast doubt on the continuity of the undefeated champion, and although many say that he is only going through a bad time, the possibility of a premature retirement does not seem far-fetched.

Rumors of a possible retirement have only increased in recent weeks, and although there is no official statement from the fighter, his silence on social media, inactivity in the ring and a series of situations outside the ring have fueled speculation.

While Davis stays out of the ring, some boxing experts have begun to question the direction of his career. In a recent interview with FightHype, Timothy Bradley, a former world champion, said that Davis should look for a high-profile fight if he decides to return, or else consider moving on.

On the other hand, figures such as Lamont Roach Jr. have also been mentioned as possible rivals, although some believe that Davis should focus on facing legends or established champions if he seeks to consolidate his legacy.

The Mystery Behind Gervonta Davis’s Sudden Removal from Topps Boxing Card Release — Fans Baffled Ahead of August 11 Launch

In a surprising twist that has left boxing fans and collectors buzzing with speculation, undefeated boxing star Gervonta “Tank” Davis has been removed from the highly anticipated Topps Boxing Card Collection scheduled for release on August 11.

The decision, which came without an official explanation from Topps or Davis’s camp, has sparked a wave of theories across social media. Collectors who had been eagerly awaiting Davis’s inclusion in the set — particularly given his massive popularity and recent ring dominance — are now left questioning what led to this sudden move.

Some fans have suggested it could be a licensing or contractual issue, while others are wondering if it may be linked to behind-the-scenes disputes or personal matters. Given Davis’s history of both in-ring brilliance and headline-grabbing controversies, the absence is raising more questions than answers.
