Gervonta Makes Move for Comeback Clash With Unbeaten Rival: “It Could Happen Very Soon”

Gervonta Davis: After months of uncertainty, Gervonta Davis appears to be moving closer to a return to the ring. Davis has not fought since his controversial majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr. in March 2025, a result many felt should have gone against him after Roach was denied a knockdown ruling.

A planned exhibition with Jake Paul was later scrapped as Davis became embroiled in legal troubles, including charges relating to battery, false imprisonment and attempted kidnapping, while an arrest warrant and civil proceedings have further complicated his return to the ring.

After being named ‘champion in recess’ earlier this year, the WBA then officially ordered ‘Tank’ to defend his lightweight world title against mandatory challenger Floyd Schofield on May 23, giving both camps until June 22 to reach an agreement before purse bids are called.

Though some felt that Davis would vacate the belt, either not ready to return or to search for a bigger name, negotiations are now reportedly ongoing. Providing the latest update, Schofield’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya told Fight Hub TV that he is expecting significant progression this week.

“Tom Brown [of TGB] and Eric Gomez from Golden Boy are in talks and we’re waiting for a proposal, which should happen in the next few days.

Gervonta Davis

“That’s a fight that Floyd always wanted. That’s a fight that I believe Tank Davis will be very motivated to make happen. It’s a great fight. People have seen Floyd fight, he’s performed very well and surprised a lot of people. This is a natural fit for him next. The fact that the WBA ordered this fight and we can make it happen very soon is music to my ears. This is one of those fights that fans will really fall in love with.”

Schofield has emerged as one of the leading young lightweights in the sport. The unbeaten 23-year-old, known as ‘Kid Austin’, holds a 19-0 record with 13 knockouts and most recently stopped former world champion Tevin Farmer inside a round.

He was due to challenge Shakur Stevenson for a world title last year before illness forced him out during fight week, but has since climbed to the No.1 position in the WBA rankings and now finds himself on the verge of the biggest opportunity of his career.

“Let’s make that clear”Former world champion says he signed for Gervonta Davis rematch but “they chose not to”

Gervonta Davis is set to return to action later this year, but one former opponent has now revealed that he had signed for a rematch with ‘Tank’, only for the three-division world champion to then have a change of heart

Davis has not won a fight in almost two years, with his most recent outing coming against former WBA super-featherweight world champion Lamont Roach Jnr back in March 2025, where he retained both his WBA lightweight crown and undefeated record by the skin of his teeth – lucky to escape with a draw.

External issues have since kept Davis away from the ring and that inactivity has caused the Baltimore knockout artist to be downgraded from WBA champion to ‘champion-in-recess’.

In order to regain the full world title, Davis will need to overcome 21-year-old mandatory challenger Floyd ‘Kid Austin’ Schofield, with that fight having been ordered by the World Boxing Association.

Speaking with FightHype, recent foe Roach has now revealed that he signed for a rematch with Davis following their draw, blaming the 31-year-old for the lack of a second fight.

“Obviously that is the rematch that I want, they chose not to do the rematch, just so that everyone knows. We were ready, we signed our contract, we did our business to make the rematch happen – the other side didn’t. So let’s just make that clear.

Anthony Joshua

“Other than that, I am not too worried about it. I am not hanging my hat on a Gervonta Davis rematch, I did what I was supposed to do that night in the ring, I should have got the victory but it is what it is, life goes on, man, and I am going to move on to bigger and better things.”

Roach will compete for the vacant WBC lightweight world title when he fights William Zepeda on Saturday, August 1. Victory in that bout could tee up an intriguing unification and rematch with Davis, if the latter is able to overcome Schofield in the autumn

The three-weight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko’s comeback plan includes Gervonta Davis and immediate world title shot

Vasyl Lomachenko:The three-weight world champion and future Hall of Famer hasn’t set foot in the ring since an eleventh-round stoppage victory over George Kambosos Jr in May 2024.

Lomachenko hung up his gloves just over a year later.

However, Ring Magazine reported last week that Loma is set to reverse his retirement with a comeback fight eyed for this autumn (September, October, November).

The same publication is now reporting that Lomachenko intends to return to an immediate world title shot against IBF and WBO super featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete.

If the Ukrainian ends up beating Navarrete, then Lomachenko is eyeing a WBA lightweight champion in recess Gervonta Davis.

Lomachenko had been locked into negotiations with Davis for a lightweight unification bout in late 2024.

Those talks subsequently collapsed when Loma stepped away from the sport.

Lomachenko’s promoter at the time, Todd duBoef, of Top Rank, revealed how close the fight was to getting done during a sitdown interview with talkSPORT.com shortly after.

“We were all for it,” he said. “We had met with Tank Davis and multiple people from PBC.

“Loma is at a place in his career where he is seasoned, he’s seen it all, he’s done it all.

“But one thing he’s not done is unify all of the titles and go undisputed.

“And I think he really wanted that, that is why his disappointment in the Haney fight was there.

“But he wanted to take a pause, and we are all for it.

“There was a framework that was relatively simple to put together and could be done.

“But at the end of the day, it is down to the athletes.

“There is no agreement in place. By framework, I mean similar to how we did Wilder and Fury, there was a framework to the dynamic of the two of us coming together and creating a massive event between PBC and Top Rank.

Gervonta Davis

“There is a framework to that, and that is how it looks as a sketch.

“The details of it are different, but you have a framework of how you work, and that’s a nice place to start.”

The wait is over: Gervonta Davis appears to be on the brink of confirming his return to the ring.

Gervonta Davis was last in action in March 2025 when he was held to a majority decision draw against Lamont Roach in a defence of his WBA lightweight title

It was a controversial result, with many feeling that Roach did enough to get the nod, especially after a knockdown wasn’t awarded in his favour after ‘Tank’ voluntarily chose to take a knee in round nine.

The 12 months that followed have left many questioning if Davis would ever be back in action at all. A planned exhibition with Jake Paul in November was cancelled due to the Baltimore man being named in a civil lawsuit regarding domestic allegations, just the latest in a string of issues outside of the ropes.

Further drama materialised after an arrest warrant was issued for ‘Tank’ citing similar accusations, leading to him to be stripped of his WBA lightweight title.

Despite all of that, Davis does now look set to return, after it was reported by Mike Coppinger that he is in advanced talks for a clash against Isaac Cruz, a man that ‘Tank’ named as his number one target late last year.

Davis has already secured a win over Cruz, who was last in action in December when he fought to a majority decision draw with former ‘Tank’ foe Roach – the man most feel should be getting the chance to face him again.

Coach Speaks: He’s fighting who I want him to, Gervonta Davis coach confirms comeback plan

A big update has been given on the fighting future of Gervonta Davis. Davis hasn’t fought since his controversial draw with Lamont Roach Jr back in March 2025, having been involved in some serious legal issues since then.

He had been scheduled to take on YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in November, but those problems outside of the ring led to that bout being cancelled, and ‘Tank’ has subsequently been stripped of his WBA lightweight title.

Many boxing fans have wondered whether or not Davis may ever compete again, but his coach Calvin Ford has insisted to The Rize Podcast that ‘Tank’ will indeed return, and that he has a good idea who he will face.

“He will be back in the mix.

Tank has been doing this sh*t since he was seven-years-old. Sometimes you need that reset because that reset means a lot.

“I can’t wait. I already know who I would like to see for a comeback. The person I want to see him in the ring with is the one we’re going to fight. That’s why I can’t say yet. I’m campaigning for it.

“At the end of the day he has to make the decision on who he wants to fight, but I know it has to be the right opponent, especially for his fans so they can really say I support him. It has to be a fight where they can be like ‘yeah!’”

Davis remains one of the biggest names in the sport, and if he was to return, he is at the top of the hit list for one reigning world champion.

Undefeated Ex-Champ Promises to Hand Gervonta Davis His First Knockout Defeat

It remains unclear when Gervonta Davis will return to the ring, but one unbeaten star has already vowed to knock ‘Tank’ out if given the chance.

Davis has not won a professional boxing contest since June 2024, with a draw against Lamont Roach Jr. being his only outing within the last 20 months, followed by the cancellation of his planned November exhibition bout with Jake Paul.

After being arrested for an alleged domestic incident, the 31-year-old was stripped of his WBA lightweight world title. Davis has since hinted at a move up in weight, stating his plans to rematch Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, though it appears he has plenty to deal with outside of the ropes before that becomes realistic.

On the ‘Come and Talk 2 Me’ podcast, former WBO lightweight world champion Keyshawn Davis shared his willingness to fight Davis should he return, promising he would hand the 31-year-old a first career defeat and do so without the aid of the judges.

Haney has said he is open to the challenge, and fans certainly are too.

Legal Trouble Deepens for Gervonta Davis as Probation Violation Triggers Arrest Warrant

A Baltimore judge has issued an arrest warrant for Gervonta Davis on grounds that he violated his probation one week after he was arrested in Miami on allegations of domestic violence.

Circuit Judge Althea M. Handy issued the warrant on Monday, according to the Baltimore Country court database.

Davis, 31, was on probation for a November 2020 hit-and-run in Baltimore that injured four people. He received 90 days of house arrest, three years of probation and 200 hours of community service. He later served 44 days in jail for violating the terms of his home detention.

Davis’ latest legal issues stem from accusations of attacking his ex-girlfriend, Courtney Rossel, on Oct. 27, 2025, at a strip club in Miami, where she had been working as a VIP cocktail server. Rossel filed a civil suit days after the incident, which forced Davis out of his November fight with Jake Paul.

A warrant for his arrest was issued on Jan. 14 on charges of battery, false imprisonment and attempted kidnapping, but it took two weeks to track the boxer down. Miami Gardens Police Department and the United States Marshals fugitive task force conducted a three-county surveillance operation to find Davis, taking him into custody last Wednesday night without incident in the Miami Design District.

Davis was released the same day after posting an $8,500 bond and ordered to not have any contact with Rossel.

Gervonta Davis, one of boxing’s top stars, was a major favorite when he was held to a shocking draw with Roach in March. The result was controversial, too.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Lamont Roach will meet in a WBA lightweight title rematch Aug. 16 in Las Vegas, sources tell The Ring.
Davis, one of boxing’s top stars, was a major favorite when he was held to a shocking draw with Roach in March.
The result was controversial, too.
Davis’ knee touched the canvas in Round 9 following a punch, and after referee Steve Willis initiated his count, he stopped at three and didn’t ultimately rule a knockdown.

If Willis called a knockdown, Roach would have won via decision. Instead, the WBA junior lightweight champion settled for a draw as he attempted to become a two-weight champion in what would have represented a shocking upset. Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) was a minus-2000 favorite.
Baltimore’s Davis said after the bout that the reason he took a knee was because grease from a hair treatment “burned my eyes.” Davis also was allowed to have his corner wipe his eyes with a towel, which is prohibited during the round. Only the referee has the authority to halt the action.

The 29-year-old Roach, of Washington D.C., remains the WBA titleholder at 130 pounds. Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) is rated No. 4 by The Ring at 130 pounds.
Davis, 30, is The Ring’s No. 1 lightweight.
