Waited for years, It Is Now Anthony Joshua In Haste to KO The Bronze Bomber’ in surprise location years before his drab comeback win

Anthony Joshua’s return to the ring has been delayed after an injury, but his return could see the making of a fight fans have wanted for years.

For years fans have requested Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder, and on several occasions a fight between the pair seemed like the logical next move.

In 2023 the fight got close once again, with AJ and Wilder co-heading a double bill that aimed to set up the mega-fight. Whilst AJ held up his end, Wilder lost to Joseph Parker by unanimous decision.

Despite Wilder’s series of losses, he has returned with a win over Tyrrell Herndon, which could now set up a fight with Joshua sometime at the end of the year.

Joshua wanted the fight seven years ago, and had an out-of-the-box idea regarding its location.

Anthony Joshua wanted to stage Deontay Wilder fight in Nigeria seven years ago

Seven years ago, in 2017, IFL spoke to AJ ahead of his fight against Carlos Takam in Cardiff, Wales.

In that interview, AJ spoke on his upcoming fight, which he won via 10th-round TKO, but also spoke on the Deontay Wilder fight, and where it should be hosted.

The topic arose when Joshua was asked if he thought he’d ever fight in his home country of Nigeria.

Joshua said, “It could happen. It just has to be the right fight. I think me and Wilder, God willing that fight comes off which it has to, would be good for Nigeria, but then it’s good for Vegas as well.”

Wilder and Joshua are both of Nigerian heritage, so the location is not unreasonable for the mega-fight between the pair.

Ahead of his fight with Herndon, it was revealed that Wilder had parted ways with his trainer Malik Scott, who oversaw just one win in his time with ‘The Bronze Bomber’.

Wilder knocked out Scott as an opponent years before they teamed up.

Wilder teamed up with Don House, who used to coach Bermane Stiverne, the only man Wilder has beaten on points.

Stiverne broke Wilder’s 32-KO streak when they fought for the world title, but was ironed out in one round in their rematch.

Round-By-Round Updates,Deontay Wilder stops Tyrrell Herndon in dominant return for first win in nearly 3 years

Deontay Wilder: Uncrowned has Deontay Wilder vs. Tyrrell Herndon live results, round-by-round updates, highlights, ring walks and start time for the Wilder vs. Herndon fight card on Friday night at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas. Former heavyweight champion Wilder ends a one-year layoff against the little-known Herndon.

Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) formerly held the WBC heavyweight title from 2015 until he lost it in his second of three fights with Tyson Fury in 2020. Wilder has recorded just one win since then, a first-round knockout of Robert Helenius in 2022. The one-time heavyweight champion is coming off back-to-back defeats to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang in Saudi Arabia.

Herndon (24-5, 15 KOs) also hasn’t competed for more than 12 months. Fighting the majority of his career on untelevised shows, Herndon isn’t a name familiar to even the most avid boxing fans. He has previously shared the ring with Richard Torrez Jr., Efe Ajagba and Brandon Glanton, while the trio were each in the early stages of their careers, but suffered early losses every time.

Wilder hopes the bout with Herndon will be his first of three in 2025, with a view toward building momentum in preparation for a potential major fight — or even another crack at a world heavyweight title — in 2026.

Wilder vs. Herndon begins at 8 p.m. ET on BLK Prime pay-per-view, with main event ring walks expected around 11 p.m. ET.

Deontay Wilder vs. Tyrrell Herndon – Round 7

Wilder is closing the gap with punches that are partially landing. Herndon was caught by a left hook in the final 10 seconds of the first minute. Wilder is looking for the one big shot that’s going to finish this. Two more big swings from Wilder. Herndon takes a knee, but no knockdown counted. Two left hooks push Herndon backwards and a right followed. Into the final minute, Herndon took a right hand from Wilder. And another and THIS ONE IS OVER! Referee Ray Corona stops the action in round 7. Wilder records his first win since October 2022!

Deontay Wilder vs. Tyrrell Herndon – Round 6

Now, Wilder is starting to connect with the right hand early in round six. Wilder is backing Herndon up with clubbing shots and the end could be near. A right hand has forced Herndon onto the ropes and Wilder puts together a combination. Two rights from Wilder chopped down on Herndon’s guard. Herndon’s glove touches the canvas in the final minute of the sixth and he is COUNTED! HUGE swing from Wilder. Wilder is going to work on the inside, and a straight right landed flush on Herndon’s chin. Somehow he survives the round!

10-8 Wilder, 60-52 Wilder

Deontay Wilder vs. Tyrrell Herndon – Round 5

Herndon’s head movement has noticeably slowed in this round. Wilder swung with the right hand twice early in the frame and Herndon could only partially block it, rather than slip it as he had done consistently in the earlier rounds. The left hands for Wilder are still having the most success for him. “The Bronze Bomber” is letting his right hands go, but can’t seem to land clean yet. A pair of right hands get through for Herndon, now.

10-9 Wilder, 50-44 Wilder

Deontay Wilder: Once one of the most feared punchers on the planet, Deontay Wilder heads into Friday’s fight with Tyrrell Herndon desperately needing to find an offensive spark.

Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KO) has lost four of his five most recent trips to the ring, but the past two fights were especially troubling. Wilder was listless in losing a wide 12-round decision to Joseph Parker, landing just 39 of 204 punches thrown. Things got even worse against Zhilei Zhang, when Wilder landed just 16 of 95 punches thrown before suffering a brutal fifth-round knockout.

Wilder went undefeated in the first 43 bouts of his pro career, including 41 knockout wins, with the lone blemish a controversial December 2018 draw against Tyson Fury in a fight most felt Fury deserved to win. Fury would prove to be the better man when he won their February 2020 rematch by TKO in Round 7 and their trilogy fight in October 2021 by KO in Round 11.

Those were the first defeats of Wilder’s career and also ended his lengthy run (10 defenses) as WBC heavyweight champion.

“Let’s Get It On”: Deontay Wilder Sets His Sights On Former Heavyweight Champion After Comeback Fight

Deontay Wilder is set for his long-awaited return to the ring this weekend. ‘The Bronze Bomber’ was last in action in June 2024, when he suffered a fifth round knockout defeat to Zhilei Zhang in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

That continued a poor run of form for the former WBC heavyweight champion which has seen him come up short in four of his last five fights, having also been on the wrong end of a points loss to Joseph Parker and two stoppage defeats to Tyson Fury.

Wilder now looks to get his career back on track when he takes on the unheralded Tyrrell Herndon at the Charles Koch Arena in Kansas on Friday.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ is expected to win the bout and add to the 42 knockouts he has recorded in his career so far, and he has now hinted at who he wants next following his comeback.

Wilder was asked to describe some of his heavyweight rivals, and when long-term foe Anthony Joshua was brought up, the American had a simple response.

“Let’s get it on.”

Wilder and Joshua have been linked to a fight with one another for nearly a decade, dating back to when both men each held versions of the world heavyweight title.

Just like Wilder, Joshua has found things difficult as of late, having suffered a fifth round knockout defeat to IBF champion Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium last September.

‘AJ’ is currently recovering from minor elbow surgery but is expected to return to the ring later this year, with a bout against Wilder now seemingly a possibility.

For Many Years: Anthony Joshua Delivers Honest Verdict On Whether Deontay Wilder Should Retire

Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder are both nearing the end of their careers. For many years, both of these heavyweights dominated the division. Joshua unifyed the WBO, WBA and IBF belts with impressive wins over the likes of Parker, Wladimir Klitschko, Carlos Takam, Alexander Povetkin and Andy Ruiz in a rematch, having lost the first time around in his US debut.

It was Oleksandr Usyk who then dethroned the Brit in 2021 and beat him again in their rematch a year later. Though ‘AJ’ rebuilt, he was stopped by Daniel Dubois in September 2024 while attempting to become a three-time world champion.

Meanwhile, Wilder was stateside with the WBC title and knocking out every man he faced until he came unstuck twice to Tyson Fury. He went on to lose two more fights against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, which has led him to take a full year away from the sport and for many in the game to call him to retire.

Speaking to BoxNation, Joshua was recently asked if he thought ‘The Bronze Bomber’ should hang up his gloves for good.
