Carlos Alcaraz secured the year-ending No 1 ranking in men’s tennis on Thursday by beating Lorenzo Musetti to sweep his group at the ATP Finals.

Alcaraz needed to win one more match to beat Jannik Sinner to the No 1 spot and the Spaniard duly did so as he eased to a 6-4 6-1 victory to progress to the season-ending semi-finals.

It is the second time in his career that Alcaraz has ended the year at the top of the rankings.

The Spaniard became the youngest player to finish a year at No 1 when he achieved the feat as a 19-year-old in 2022.

Musetti had been in the mix to progress to the semi-finals but Alcaraz didn’t give him that chance as he swept aside the Italian in less than 90 minutes, sealing the result on his third match point for his third win in the Jimmy Connors group.

“Obviously it’s always great to achieve your goals,” Alcaraz said following victory.

“To end the year as world No 1 wasn’t a goal at the beginning of the year because I saw it really far away with Jannik [Sinner] at the top.

“But from the middle of the season I started to play such great tennis, winning a lot of tournaments and trophies in a row, so since that it was one of the main goals and I’m really happy I was able to achieve that here in this tournament after three wins.

“Today I played with a lot of nerves. It was really difficult to handle it to be honest. The No 1 was there in my mind.

“I couldn’t play relaxed, as I wanted, but overall I think I handled it best I could. Hopefully in the semi-final I raise my level a little bit, but I’m excited to do it.”

Carlos Alcaraz Blames Lack of Clarity for Wimbledon Final Loss: ‘I Wasn’t Sure What to Do’

Carlos Alcaraz admits there were moments he “didn’t know what to do” in the face of Jannik Sinner’s brilliant play during their final at Wimbledon on Sunday.

Second seed Alcaraz, chasing a third consecutive title in SW19, missed out on a sixth Grand Slam after losing in four sets to fierce rival and world No 1 Sinner.

Alcaraz took the first set on Centre Court but the Italian came storming back to claim his first title at the All England Club.

Alcaraz only landed 53% of his first serves, compared to 62% for Sinner, and the Spaniard acknowledged that Sinner’s level was consistently better throughout their three-hour battle, particularly regarding how both returned each other’s second serve.

“It was all about him pushing me to the limit in every point,” Alcaraz said. “Mentally, it’s really tough to maintain. When you see the opponent playing such good tennis, I didn’t know what to do.

“From the baseline, he was better than me. The big key was the second serves, he was returning really well, then he was in a position to attack with the second ball. It’s difficult when you’re defending all the time.”

“I just gave him a lot of free points when he had a second serve. He has a big first serve, but when you have the chance to return the second serve, I had to do more with those points.

“He was serving quite easily, winning his service games quite easily. I had to better on that, but it was a great match, I think the level was really high.”

Despite his French Open final heartbreak, Sinner bounced back in impressive fashion on the grass to claim his first non-hard-court Grand Slam. Alcaraz, however, insists he was not surprised that the Italian responded so well.

“He didn’t surprise me at all because I know he’s a really nice player and a huge champion,” he said.

“Champions learn from the losses. I knew at the beginning that he was going to learn from that final, not going to make the same mistakes as he did in the French Open final.

“The way he played today, it was really, really high. I knew he was going to play like this. Overall, he didn’t surprise me at all because I know he’s a big champion.”

The young duo, both in their early twenties, have been the subject of dating rumors, which Raducanu quickly dismissed.

Despite this, they’ve committed to a high-profile mixed doubles partnership at the upcoming U.S. Open and are reportedly close friends

Sports finance expert Rob Wilson, in an interview with OLBG, suggested that the pair could leverage their popularity even more in the coming years.

Discussing their appeal to brands, Wilson said: “Raducanu and Alcaraz pairing certainly has brand alchemy as it has that tennis chemistry because they’ll obviously be able to win a fairly significant amount of money if they’re able to go far in the mixed doubles at the U.S. Open.

“We’ve spoken about Emma Raducanu’s earnings quite a lot. She’s already banked in the region of around $15 million over the last couple of years without those deep tournament runs that we know are so essential for those commercial endorsements.

“I think her progress at Wimbledon this year, the way she’s re-captured some of the crowd and certainly column inches in the media, will really help her rise back up through those rankings a little bit and perhaps add to her commercial power.

“There is no doubt that partnering with somebody like Carlos Alcaraz on things like joint branding campaigns that mixed doubles novelty that we’re seeing and social traction that she might be able to get through brands like Nike, Dior, Porsche, etc, which are all likely to be big benefits for her..

“So together they can really kind of target that Generation Z, Generation Alpha demographic, be really active on social media, and almost become tennis royalty, But in order to cement that position, I think Emma really needs to be getting deeper into tournaments.”

Prior to the duo teaming up for the all-star mixed doubles showdown in New York, Raducanu will compete at the forthcoming Canadian Open. She’ll kick off her singles quest against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk on Tuesday afternoon.

Reports suggest that Alcaraz will choose to skip the tournament though, having made it to the Wimbledon final earlier this month.

Speaking on his rivalry with Sinner, Alcaraz said in his post-match press conference, “I just am really, really happy about having this rivalry with him. I think it’s great for us and it is great for tennis. Every time we play against each other, I think our level is really high. I think we don’t watch a level like this, if I’m honest with you. I don’t see any player playing against each other having the level that we are playing when we face each other.”

World number one Jannik Sinner won his first Wimbledon title by wearing down Carlos Alcaraz in another high-quality Grand Slam final between the dominant forces of the men’s game.

Italy’s Sinner claimed a 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory at the All England Club, avenging his brutal French Open defeat by Spanish world number two Alcaraz just 35 days ago.

Then, Sinner led by two sets – and held three championship points – before Alcaraz roared back to win a five-set classic lasting more than five hours.

Now, the 23-year-old has responded by taking two-time defending champion Alcaraz’s crown on the Centre Court grass, following another gripping contest which again showcased the pair’s shot-making, athleticism and star power.

“It is so special,” Sinner said. “I’m living my dream.”

Sinner, who served a three-month doping ban earlier this year, has claimed the fourth Grand Slam title of his career and a first major victory not on a hard court.

A composed and clinical performance from the top seed ended Alcaraz’s 24-match winning streak.

The manner in which he served out victory from going a break up at 3-1 in the fourth set – given his experience in Paris last month – was admirable.

There was a moment of knowing consternation among Sinner’s supporters when he missed a first match point, but he reset to take his second opportunity before dropping to his haunches at the net.

Sinner’s win stopped 22-year-old Alcaraz from becoming only the fifth man in the Open era to win three consecutive Wimbledon titles.

“It is always difficult to lose, but first of all I have to congratulate Jannik again,” Alcaraz said.

“It is a really well-deserved trophy. He has been playing great tennis and will continue to be a great rival.”

What makes Sinner so special above all else is his mentality.

The man from the mountains in northern Italy regularly remains ice-cold in the most decisive matches – which is why his fumble against Alcaraz in Paris felt so surprising.

Little appears to faze the mild-mannered Italian – on or off court.

Sinner, who was on the brink of defeat against Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round until his pectoral muscle injury changed the course of tennis history, celebrated by thrusting both arms aloft, puts their rivalry back on a knife edge, with the 23-year-old now trailing Alcaraz only by five Grand Slam titles to four and putting an end to a five-match losing streak against the Spaniard.

It is also Sinner’s first major title away from his favoured hard courts, while Alcaraz suffered a first major final defeat, unable to find the same magic that had brought him back from the brink on the clay.

Sinner said in his on-court presentation: “I had a very tough loss in Paris. But it doesn’t really matter how you win or lose the important tournaments, you just have to understand what you did wrong, try to work on that.

The 23-year-old Sinner drew first blood in the first Wimbledon men’s final contested by a pair born in the 2000s, breaking for a 3-2 lead, but Alcaraz was certainly not holding back, slamming down a 136mph ace to start the match and hitting 139 in his second service game – a new record for the Spaniard, until he twice clocked 140 later in the contest.

Sinner struck the first blow, a wild Alcaraz forehand handing over the first break in the fifth game, but back came the second seed with three games in a row.

Soon that was four, with Alcaraz winning surely one of the best set-winning rallies seen on Centre Court: Sinner’s 118mph second serve was returned with interest, Alcaraz angled a forehand out wide, his rival thumped a forehand into the corner only for the Spaniard to somehow conjure a backhand winner.

He stood with his finger pointed to his head as the crowd rose to acclaim another piece of tennis wizardry.

“I really believe that he’s a complete player.”

Nadal continued: “He’s brave, he’s able to go to the net very often. Great forehand, great backhand.”

On the improvements he’d like to see from the phenom, he said: “Of course needs to improve a little bit the serve, but he’s just 18 today, so he has plenty of time. As I said, he’s humble enough and he’s a hard worker, so I don’t have a doubt that he will do it, no? His movement is great. He has plenty of ingredients to become a great player. That’s the main thing.”

The one thing that may hinder Alcaraz’s success was not himself, Nadal said, but the “quality of the big opponents” in front of him. “Nothing is easy in this life. Be one of the best players in the world and fight for the most important titles is something very difficult, but I really believe that he’s one of the guys that he can do it.”

Alcaraz returns to the court on Tuesday, the 8th of July, for his quarterfinal against the British player Cameron Norrie. The semifinals for the men’s singles tournament takes place Friday, before Sunday’s final.

Carlos Alcaraz: Britain’s last remaining hope in singles Cameron Norrie made it through to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon after beating Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry in five sets.

The 29-year-old led by two sets and had a match point in the third, but was taken to a fifth by the towering Chilean.

However, Norrie held his nerve in the decider and did not drop serve all day in a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (7-9) 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 victory over a gruelling four hours and 27 minutes to return to the last eight for the first time since 2022.

Norrie, the world No 61, a semi-finalist here in 2022 is now only the third British man to reach the last eight more than once in the last 50 years, after Tim Henman and Andy Murray and now the last home player left in the tournament.

Norrie, who has now won nine of his 10 matches on his favourite Court One, said: “I hung tough when I needed to and the atmosphere was so good.

“Credit to Nico, he did an unbelievable job staying with me. I just had to keep fighting.

“It’s my coach’s birthday and I forgot to get him a present, so I got him the win.”

Jarry, 6ft 7in South American, was clearly unhappy about something at the end, with the two players engaged in a long, heated conversation after shaking hands.

“He said I was a little bit vocal, but that’s my energy. It was a competitive match,” added Norrie.

Norrie scrambled brilliantly to snatch the first set with what proved to be the only break of the first four.

He took the second on a tie-break and had match point in the third-set tiebreak, only for towering Jarry to save it and force a fourth set, which he sealed with an ace.

Jarry, who has seen his ranking plummet from 16 this time last year to 143 due to a health issue which has affected his vision and balance came through qualifying before knocking out eighth seed Holger Rune, American Learner Tien and Brazilian wonderkid Joao Fonseca to reach the fourth round.

He banged down 46 aces to take his tournament-leading tally to 111, but Norrie returned superbly to break early in the decider, save three break points in the next game and close out victory in a marathon encounter.

OK, 15-0, then 3-0 as Rublev cranks a forehand out of play. Rublev then prevails in a fine rally that sends Alcaraz to Putney Bridge and back. Then, an Alcaraz error for 30-30. Uh oh? An ace down the line, and match point arrives. He will need another as Rublev forces an error for deuce. Here it comes after a lob and smash routine plants the ball beyond reach. The serve skids in, and Rublev can’t return it. The champion is in the quarter-finals.

Alcaraz makes it 4-2 with a love hold, sealing it with a chopped drop. Rublev is asked to save himself by holding serve but here comes the relentlessness. 0-30 becomes 15-30 with a chopping volley. Then Rublev misses a winner and must face break point. He saves himself with some power hitting, winning a rally and then smashing a huge serve. He’s beaten by Alcaraz’s court speed, and is pegged back to deuce. But, but Rublev holds. That’s gutsy in the extreme.

Here comes the Alcaraz push. 0-30 as Rublev tightens up. Then comes a double fault for three break points. Rublev saves the first two, and then Alcaraz is fooled by a mishit second serve. Next, Rublev nets, and then, another second serve and Alcaraz steals in and doesn’t miss this time. Rublev is furious with himself. It’s 3-2, and Alcaraz will serve next.

Rublev comes out, full of gusto after his comfort break. Some big hitting lands him the fourth set’s opening games, and he holds the third, too. Alcaraz is less of a server but is still launching bombs. He levels at 2-2 with some groundstrokes having to help him along.

Alcaraz takes the third set 6-4, leads 2-1

Alcaraz, with a couple of wobbles, sees out his service game. He’s hitting the lines with his shots and pushing Rublev to the limit. The Russian is still holding strong, and so Alcaraz is asked to serve out at 5-4 up in the third set. He does so in mere seconds.

Alcaraz really turns it on in the seventh game, two unbelievable returns hand him break point, and then, even better, from the back of the court he shovels over a winner when Rublev had all but won the point. 4-3, and he’s a break up.

The third set is going with serve but it feels like Rublev is piling on the pressure. At 2-3 down, Alcaraz faces a break point after some real court speed from Alcaraz. A huge serve means it’s deuce. Double fault from Alcaraz takes it back there, too. But he sees it out for 3-3.
