But now, a fighter who pushed him to the limit, Erislandy Lara, has spoken out to advise the Omaha boxer on how to approach a fight against the 67-fight veteran.

In an interview with FightHype, with the help of a translator, Lara assessed the fight itself.
He said: “He sees it as a very interesting 50/50 fight, he feels like Canelo is very strong right now, and he wants to figure out how Crawford will handle the power in the early rounds.”
The American Dream’ himself fought Saul to a hotly contested split decision loss, which boxing fans and pundits have been split on ever since.
After pushing the 35-year-old to the brink, he shared his key advice on how to prevent the dominant, undisputed champion from taking over the bout.
“He remembers fighting Canelo back 14 years ago, he remembers he uses his legs real good, and as long as Crawford uses his legs and he doesn’t let Canelo just hit him in the arms and beat him up on the arms, he has a very good chance,” Lara said.

It has been 11 years since the controversy of their split decision in the MGM Grand, but while the history books will show a win for the super middleweight king, the statistics show a slightly different fight.

The now 42-year-old fighter had an incredibly effective jab against the young Guadalajaran, so much so that he neutralised any attempts for his foe to establish his lead hand.
55 jabs landed for the Cuban-turned-American compared to Canelo, who landed under 10 jabs, a 5% connection rate overall across the fight’s distance.
More astounding was the fact that by the second round, Lara had landed more jabs than Alvarez did across the entire 12 rounds.
But his dominance does not stop there, as he edged his opponent 28% to 23% in punch accuracy.
What this presents is a solid basis for Crawford to work off, using his legs and his long levers to keep the fight at range, which could prevent the five-division legend from walking him down.
